Okay, it's time for a proper intro thread, not just the one I whacked up there during the workday.

I'm Adele, I'm a law librarian by day and romance author by night. I talk occasionally about a bunch of stuff but a lot about books.

I'm about to talk about my books!

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

Many people are posting close-reads of the gay hockey romance show and book series, and calling out solid critique right now. Romance deserves good-faith criticism.

“You are all mindless fanatics with no critical thinking skills who do not appreciate true art” is the worst-faith criticism.

Camped out here on Two Things Can Be True Hill:

1. The romance genre has a history deeply entwined with white supremacy, ableism, and the most reductive kind of stereotypes. Like every genre.

2. Painting all romantasy readers as “zombies” is also a reductive stereotype, and misogynist to boot.

My [53F] neighbor [56M] is utterly charming—which is a problem. I have more than one reason to keep men at arm’s length. But his cat [2F] found her way into my apartment. Now I am in a feline time-share. I don’t want him to get the wrong idea, but I can’t seem to resist either him or the cat. AITA?

love that software developers are advertising AI functionality in every single app now and it's up to you to try to figure out if they mean "this has spellcheck" or "everything you create in this app will sync in real-time to sam altman's personal laptop" or something in between

My favorite kind of marketing copy:

My [56M] cat [2F] keeps appearing at my next-door neighbor’s [53F] apartment. Trouble is, I can see why the cat likes her. I like her too, but she’s really prickly and private. I’m kind of using the cat as an excuse to spend some time with her. AITA?

One reason I'm a bit bittersweet about the Meet-Cat cover is I know this is the last one I'll do with Nathalie. But we're going out with a bang!
After over 25 years in #romancelandia, I'm retiring! Come end January 2026, I'll hang up my pen, shut down my rig, and let go of my subscriptions (farewell, adobe, you thieves). It's been a wild ride!

truly amazing how many different professions there are where everyone’s newest persistent headache is “AI zealots high on their own supply”
Met a 40yo gallery-ist at a party in SF. We spent most of the party talking abt the art world, but mostly what she talked abt was how most of her life now is telling AI “artists” that they are not artists, she won’t sell their “work” in her gallery, & that “prompt writer” isn’t an artistic medium.

I've been meaning to watch this. And now I will.
I'm finally starting season 2 of "Finding Mr. Christmas," the Hallmark reality show where the most wholesome, non-toxic men in America compete for the chance to be a Christmas movie star (somehow a real job), judged by a gay man and Barbra Jean from "Reba"

it's the greatest show you're not watching

And it says a HELL OF A LOT about your gendered approach to labor.
You can't simultaneously tell me that it's too hard to use a trans person's pronouns and then turn around and call an AI chatbot "she."

If you're giving less consideration to a human being than a fucking computer program, you're just an asshole.

My standard response is "tell me, in specific detail, how exactly I'll be 'left behind,'" and to date not a single techbro has ever answered the question. "You'll be left behind" is a statement of religious faith, not business fact, and should be treated as such.
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively

And yes, for all the Norwegians who follow me, those three loaves were ONE batch.

My bestemor's original recipe made FIVE loaves. I cut it down so I could at least start the bread in my stand mixer.
On a more personal note than my extended rant (hi, new followers!) I woke up this morning to find my mom has come down with something and won't be able to visit.

I spent the bulk of today sulking when I was supposed to be making six loaves of julekake. But I did figure out my shit enough to make 3.

*deep breath*

Okay. I am cranky on a lot of levels today, so.

But I got a comment on another platform that said, "you are going to save us in the future. Libraries and librarians are the backbone of society."

Let me tell you why I hated this seemingly innocuous comment.

Per my last cranky mini-rant on academics and AI.
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

I would struggle to trust an academic who thinks that AI is the future and anyone who doesn't get on board the hype train is irrational.

Look, I know a meat grinder when I see it. I don't need to feed myself into it, you absolute fucknugget.

Coming back to this, I'm still struck by the implication that academics should care if the AI pushers "trust" all our work that's done without AI.

I don't know, man, you all seemed to trust our work enough to steal it from us wholesale.
