Dell has been on this beat since the very beginning and points out a thing often missed: the cost to all of us for Amazon’s loss prevention strategy is a nationwide surveillance network.
Ring is first and foremost a scheme to charge Amazon customers to deter crime that costs Amazon (not the customers themselves) billions annually in refunds, returns, double shipping, and customer service overhead.

The threats from AI are the same as the threats from capitalism, namely that unaccountable owners and billionaires will use it to erode labor rights and flood the zone with propaganda, not that somehow ChatGPT will become self-aware or replace all white collar jobs in the next 18 months. Be real
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

It's technically impressive for the standards of the slop machine but (1) it's boring (2) it's lifeless (3) the backgrounds aren't static and don't make any sense and (4) it's again 15 seconds of regurgitated bullshit
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ writer Rhett Reese reacts to viral AI video of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting:

“I hate to say it. It’s likely over for us.”

Functionalist approaches measure intelligence by how closely its outputs resemble the human mind. If you constantly recalibrate its outputs to resemble a human mind, you're not creating a thinking machine. You are creating a machine to trick other functionalists.
To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the ‘nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

Thinking about record mixes for some current projects, and I think this is the best thing I've done so far in terms of mix. Also my friends Will and Ana knocked it out of the fucking park

Startup culture in the bay area is just a series of weird diet and lifestyle fads to distract themselves from the fact that they are being ruthlessly exploited
going to start referring to all this no-caffeine, omni-spectrum sobriety, celibacy, 996, workout and diet focus stuff as "mormonism with silicon valley characteristics" because it's more polite than calling it "homeschool mindset"

congratulations to the Seahawks, who are technically named after the gorgeous Osprey — a great victory for birders everywhere!

below is my rendition of an Osprey soaring to victory, drawn with full attention to detail. and no, this is not a photo!

hard to think of a better example of "you may not believe in class war, but billionaires know they're in one" than this
This is bleak: Jes Staley, currently CEO of Barclays, reassuring Epstein that popular revolt against financial elites is unlikely because capitalism and pop culture have defanged social movements, leaving people more invested in consumption than justice.
