Machiavelli: It is better to be feared than loved, but you must absolutely avoid being *hated.*

So many forget that last part.
It is a bit alarming, when rereading Machiavelli's The Prince, that it lands as reportage rather than political theory. However, I find great comfort in the fact that they are really effing it up.

The state does not actually get to presumptively make "making it possible for someone to talk to a minor" a crime, even though the obvious figleaf of calling it an "unfair or deceptive trade practice"!

Terra Ignota. As many movies as it takes. All actors are nonbinary except Madame D'Arouet, who is played by the hottest cis person we can find. It's still most gazey about Sniper.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

A four-part adaptation of Dykes to Watch Out For. A 260-minute CinemaScope epic on the life of Julie d'Aubigny. Cel-animated depictions of the Battles of Balaclava, North Cape, Chancellorsville, and Mobile Bay.

i'm going to sound sarcastic here but genuinely one of the most interesting aspects of LLMs is that they are proving that evil is real, by which i mean if you train them to do one bad thing they start doing other bad things that you have not trained them to do

"That's impossible," said Client. "You told me the truth the whole time. [Name] lied on my name nonstop. Only defense attorneys do that. I've watched Law and Order.

If this is leaving you wondering why objects made of the same material don't just fuse together when they touch - that's a better question than you think because the answer is really complicated and sometimes it DOES happen, causing, say, a door on a space station to randomly weld itself open

Moe was fined $5K and suspended 2 games for "ordering (the Nuggets) to quit playing defense."

Yes, the Renaissance (& many eras) are full of examples of the pattern that the very rich try to turn wealth into power. If the system won’t let them, they’ll break the system to do it. Contrast the instability of Genoa (no new families could join the elite) with Venice (the 0.01% could be voted in)
In which TPM reminds me of @adapalmer.bsky.social's Reinventing the Renaissance

"But it’s also an effort by those who have had a vast run-up in wealth over the last quarter century wanting to use that wealth to lock in that wealth by the acquisition of direct political power."
