To all who're new to following and who've been here for a while, hi! I write about the future because I refuse to give up hope, and because giant queer ladies deserve to have their stories told. Check out details of my stories, typewriters, and games at phoebebartonsf.com - thanks for being around!

“I love you,” Random Generator Bot tells me.

Warmth blossoms inside me and a grin breaks across my lips. “I love you too, Random Gene—“

“Plate tectonics digest cannulas,” Random Generator Bot says.

My smile fades. “Yeah…” I nod at Random Generator Bot. “They sure do, buddy.”

one reason I set my stories way far in the future is so that either I never have to see them move into the realm of alternate history, or I survive the tide of centuries to see them move into the realm of alternate history

getting real tired of "the Gorn were just defending themselves!" arguments

attacking an installation they believe to be an invasion is one thing. faking transmissions to lure the Enterprise to it is self-defence the way the Empire of Japan attacking Pearl Harbor was self-defence

"You, who believe in the promise of previous ambitions and the hope of the new world to come, are a clown and a fool, as opposed to me, who delights in the mud of current miseries and cannot imagine how quickly they can be toppled."
You clowns cannot imagine this better world or we would be living in it LMMFAO

a perfect kernel for an actually-good far future Star Trek setting already exists, and it's called Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda

i'd like to take this opportunity to remind people that Larry Niven read (and wrote) books, and also advised the US government to spread rumours that hospitals stole people's organs to discourage undocumented immigrants from using the health care system

merely reading does not make one Not Terrible

Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There! (manga 2006-2009, anime 2015-2016)
I shared a scan of the cover of this issue of Dragon magazine a couple of weeks back, but then spotted it on eBay for a couple of quid earlier in the week.

It's still such a cool piece of art in its own right, and got some great articles.💜 And yep, still powerful Shadowrun Feuerschwinge vibes.

"this is not who we should be" contains everything we need

acknowledgement of failures and horrors not past and present, and a determination to be better

I still think it's strange that Jersey City isn't "New Jersey City"

it's like if the city across the river was "York City"

i don't know if i will ever understand people who think judicial corporal punishment of adults is barbaric *and* who don't think incarceration is barbaric

This is akin to how, in Canada, the roots of the RCMP and NWMP before it are with the Reign of Terror in Red River (1869-70).
The fundamental problem here is not one of bad apples. This is what the agency is designed to do. The barrel is bad to start with.
This video filmed by Ben Luhmann shows the moment a federal agent sprayed chemical irritants directly into a man's face in south Minneapolis.

Three agents already had the man pinned to the ground when a fourth agent walked up and sprayed the irritants.

remember: this is canonically how replicators work in Star Trek
reminds me of Yes Men where they’re straight-faced explaining to a board room a recycled burger which is partially made from “used” burgers that are “deposited” in the company restroom, or something like that.

I think that one actually broke some attendees from agreeing with just anything.

oh, yes, and another thing: the Star Trek idea of 32nd century nacelles not being physically attached to the rest of their starship is fucking ridiculous for an absolute host of reasons and whoever came up with it should be bonked by a rolled-up newspaper

two roads diverged in a fluorine wood
Fun fact: humanity could very easily have figured out a way to do fluorine chemistry without blowing yourself up, much earlier.

Moissan isolated elemental fluorine in 1886, this could have happened almost a century earlier had chemists been better at not blowing themselves up trying it.

one reason I think I can't get into the Starfleet Academy series is that it's way too far in the future.

the 24th century is distant, but not bogglingly so.

the 32nd century is as far from us as we are from Charlemagne, and yet

"average american owns 1.2 guns" factoid actualy just statistical error. average american owns 0 guns. Firearms Georg, who lives in armory & owns over 10,000,000, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
