Why do I do this to myself? How do you explain to people that society as a whole is better off when children are fed, housed and educated? That’s what I pay my taxes for! I also want decent social care for adults who need it, decent roads and cleaner air. I guess that makes me a pinko commie.

Mate you may have noticed I am not in the US. I’m from a country which while being pushed right wing most people still believe in a common good and social welfare. I don’t have a child of my own. I also don’t drive but I think roads should be safe. A better educated society is happier and healthier

My Teen is now in sixth form so no need for uniform. It’s such a relief! He was incredibly hard on shoes at the same age. I feel your pain.

I don’t either. Taking care of the most vulnerable population is a public good. I don’t have children (although I am a stepmother), but of course I want children to be cared for, fed and housed. In my opinion it’s sociopathic to think otherwise.

But why is that different from state schools? Or Medicare? Or public transport? Or maintaining public roads? All of these are funded via direct taxation.
