New on my newsletter: there are few things more cheering than discovering a serious new bakery within striking distance. Coastal Bake Shop is a boon to Houston’s east side and the Bay Area: read about it at alison-cooks-htown.ghost.io
A well-browned croissant with many layers swirled across its circumference, and a pointy, layered little tail end that makes it look like a pastry sea creature. It sits on a vintage spring-green plate with scalloped edges, and a peach and its darker green leaves peeking out on the left side.

I hate the digital ones. They break so often. I now get mine used from a place here in the east end. Old fashioned agitator machines.

It has to happen. But I fear the Dems are not equal to the moment.

According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.

genuinely impossible to overstate what the secret police are doing. It is state hooliganism. It is gangsterism as policy. It is the jouissance of the original klan nightriders that followed the civil war. they terrorize minority communities while intentionally paralyzing local governments.

Trump has so transformed and degraded the machinery of American government that it isn't enough to just beat him or his successor. Someone has to rebuild the liberal democratic state.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will release 2,000 fingerling sturgeon into the Cuyahoga River, hoping that in 15 to 20 years they will come back to reproduce.
Once abundant Lake Erie fish to be stocked Saturday at three Cuyahoga River sites
The sturgeon population in Lake Erie was depleted starting in the 1800s and now efforts are underway to bring it back.

For #nationalpoetryday, one of my favourite short poems. "Ireland", by Paul Muldoon.

The Volkswagen parked in the gap,
But gently ticking over.
You wonder if it's lovers
And not men hurrying back
Across two fields and a river.

I can’t believe I’m watching interviews of city mayors talking about how they are coordinating with other mayors to discuss how to protect their residents FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

I know we are “used to it” but it is absolutely insane

President Trump was met by silence as he began his Quantico address, a contrast from the rousing applause he expects at his speeches.

“I’ve never walked into a room so silent before,” Trump said. “If you want to applaud, you applaud.” wapo.st/4gSqzmS
