He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

… it was listening practice but I always felt in some ways she needed us to know that the Iraq she knew was not the one that was in the press. She gifted me a desire to see Iraq through her eyes - I almost went as an aid worker but life happened. I hope wherever she is she is having a good day

My first Arabic teacher was an Iraqi refugee from Basra. In Iraq she taught English at the university and in the UK she volunteered as a language instructor in one of the largest community centres in the city. She was brilliant. She would regularly tell us stories about Basra during class she said
