Hello! 🩵
I'm Minna. Excuse me while I unpack my bags a bit.

I spend my free time working on a webcomic "Book of Change". It is a weird mix of sci-fi themes, talking magical books and bitter sweet feels~

I also love to share comics, art and writing related posts.

I'll gladly try to answer any questions about my comicing process the best I can.

Although I have still lot to learn too. :)
Share your knowledge if/when you can. Teaching other people how to do what you do doesn’t lessen your art - it just means more and better art for everyone.

I appreciate when people are willing to tell me about their brushes, how they study, etc… I want to put that back out into the world.

So my first tip for this is just Read a Lot of Comics. have comics in your bookshelf (real or virtual) that you can flip through for inspiration and see how other artists are working and what/how they fit visuals into a panel. I read a lot of manga on my phone, and every time i see a page that--
Do you have any general tips on how to improve comic layouts/paneling? I want to start making proper comics but paneling is something I really struggle with (especially when it comes to making sure my sketch compilations fit the panel size while still being effective/showing everything I want)

Even self-care can turn into another stressful job. This is just a little reminder to take the pressure off when you can. It’s okay to just be sometimes. 🐾

My rule of thumb for comic bgs is to make at least the establishing shot’s bg detailed & clear; the rest of the bgs on that page can be drawn in shorthand, if you’re low on time/resources

YMMV but comickers aren’t paid enough to draw all high-detail bgs, & the bg will prob be covered by text anyway
I’m not trying to be rude but I’m not happy about “you’re just one artist—don’t draw backgrounds!” Cmon homie

Don’t skimp on the background. That’s part of the comic! Don’t skimp on anything! Just draw slower! That’s where you give yourself the grace. Don’t half ass your comic

Seeing comic artists try to be art influencers on social media is so tragic because comics take effort on the part of the viewer to enjoy (reading) and aren't as instantly captivating as videos/animation.

BoC update!

Had fun drawing the very dramatic backgrounds for this page~

Just... don't ask me about exact the layout of this library. :'D

Yes, & also:

Write down ALL your fun ideas and keep em in one place (notes app, notebook, word doc, etc). Including the ones you end up *not* using for your story.

Refer to it next time you get writer’s/artist’s block. You’ll find a perfect use for each idea eventually, be it now or 5 yrs from now
WRITING TIP, something simple but it catches many of us out: if you have a great/fun idea for your story, *use it now*.

Don’t save your ideas for some nebulous other story you might write tomorrow. I promise you’ll have more.

Break your story’s status quo. Go a step further. Use the big idea.

This was a huge challenge—capturing the 90s Image vibe of Jim Lee and Scott Williams and the era’s distinct coloring. Luckily, my amazing friend Laura Martin swooped in and added all the shiny Wildstorm/Image zazz I hoped for. Thank you so much, Laura! Squeee!
