It's been a minute, but I've got a new post up at the blog. It's about a pretty timely (but also timeless) and important topic. Please let me know what you think!
Bravery in Defense of Reality
Knowing how reality works solidifies the ground on which to defend it from fascists.

Chicago restaurants are struggling as ICE fears mount.

The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has restaurant owners, chefs and workers on high alert as they cope with staffing shortages and safety concerns. blockclubchi.co/46JEoRe

“Nearly every agent on Baltimore’s domestic terrorism squad was reassigned this year to work full time on immigration enforcement, forcing them to walk away from investigations of a network of violent predators that targets and exploits children online, according to two former FBI officials …”

And as that bitter old man is targeting his perceived enemies bc he’s a bitter old man, he’s letting child predators and other criminals get away.

“FBI agents reassigned to round up immigrants have had to walk away from investigations into violent predators who target and exploit children online.”

You must defer to the president’s determination that there is an armed rebellion in Chicago, argues the govt’s lawyer.

That’s the Trump admin’s stance on everything. When the law doesn’t allow it, lie about the facts until it’s something that would be legal, then insist others live inside the lie.
heathercherone.bsky.social
Perry: DOJ's definition of rebellion would mean that
"literally all nonviolent protest” could be considered evidence of rebellion. Is that your argument?
Hamilton: The president has determined there is a danger of a rebellion, and you must defer to that finding

Democrats should demand the firing of Stephen Miller as a condition for reopening the government.

Again, MAGAts and other conservatives think white supremacist, eugenicist, patriarchal hierarchy is natural law, and that’s all they ever mean by “law” or “order” — the exact opposite of what the phrase “rule of law” actually means.

Their ideology is entirely incompatible with having a society.
andiew66.bsky.social
The people of Chicago should not be paying salaries or wages for people to facilitate the rollout of a partisan federal agenda targeting us for cruelty. It’s outside cops’ job description, bullshit as that is. If the local cops want in on that MAGAt ICE shit, they need to ask Trump to pay them. LOL.

🧵 Trump is criminally invading states under false pretenses. His supporters are trying to instigate violence by dressing as antifa and committing crimes.

In this clip from Portland, Joey Gibson of "Patriot Prayer" and his fiancée, Lindsey Nichols, tried to cause trouble before being forced away.
andiew66.bsky.social
Unfortunately MAGAs define their reality by hierarchical loyalty rather than by evidence or reason, so, no. For them there are no “real” conditions apart from what Leader says. Which is of course even more incredibly dangerous.

(That’s entirely distinct from Aspie supremacy, btw. All neurotypes have tradeoffs. Types that diverge from the most common aren’t better, just vitally important to the collective. And not for their utility; high support needs people matter too.)
andiew66.bsky.social
Evolution doesn’t operate solely on a zero-sum competitive, individualistic level like classical (and social) “Darwinists” believe. At the population level, having a subset not neurally pruned into the same shape, to make the same predictions, is vital for survival and progress.
andiew66.bsky.social
Neurodivergents more often (not always!) evade this and seek truth as actual correspondence with observed reality, which is why those in power are feverishly trying to discredit, suppress, and straight-up eliminate us.

AI is central to the fascist project to take advantage of normie conformity.
mims.bsky.social
Humans evolved a cognitive 'social proof' system for establishing what's true (if enough of the people around me believe something, I'll go along) and media fragmentation + social media has completely and totally hijacked it

Feels like AI will only make this worse
lordbusinessman.bsky.social
"no in the future people will cryptographically verify what's true and-" no they will not. People are fucking stupid.

Relatedly, this @brianbeutler.bsky.social idea of the "median experience of tyranny" is a good way to say that while majorities oppose the lawbreaking/abuses of power, Miller is banking on the middle lacking deep conviction about all of it (as I suggest)

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

The entire piece is excellent, and strikes the tone that is so crucial for this moment. But I'm most intrigued by Meredith's question near the middle: "Who is served by pretending we live in an America different from this one?"

Genuine question - what are OpenAI’s Sora and other video generation tools good for?

I am honestly trying to understand what is so important that it’s worth the cost. If you have examples, I would be interested to hear them.

One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...
