Thinking of that Jeffrey Archer book where they con the guy by saying he got an honourary doctorate at Oxford or something, in return for a donation. Maybe set up a fake ceremony, but say "oh no one's ever won it twice before, you should keep going with peace deals" and see if he falls for it.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

What a lovely piece!
Recently discussed a student assessment with a colleague. On paper, it was terrible: confusing, ungrammatical, over-written yet under-explained.
And yet ... "It's got SOMETHING," we agreed. "It's not ... boring. It's bonkers, but alive."
AI would have definitely failed it.

we need a word for a type of person who spends all their time working to live in a city so they can be near cool things, but they don't actually like going out

What the hell happened to The Independent?!

Honestly I feel like I’m going mad, everyone involved at The Independent should feel ashamed that this is their job and this is how they treat a dead woman’s legacy.

It’s also beyond insane that the Independent are quoting ChatGPT slop from a completely random blog that went viral, including factual errors about her life, and pretending that Routledge wrote it.

I see you've clarified now, but how on earth could you think that was true?

If I wrote Doctor Who fanfic, which I never have, I'd have her grow increasingly irritated with his constant devotion and total dependence on her, constantly aware that she was responsible for making him yet he's very much NOT the actual man she really wanted. Could be psychological torture!

"What you fail to see Mr. Pope" is truly the most incredible assemblage of words I have seen coming out of X, the Everything App, in quite some time.

really enjoying all the people trying to explain the bible to the pope today
Pope Leo XIV
Today, more than ever, we must return to the heart, the center of feeling and emotion, the locus of freedom. Though it includes reason, the heart transcends and transforms it. Only by returning to the heart can we undergo a true ecological conversion that transforms our personal

I reject this whole heartedly. What you fail to see Mr Pope, the Bible says

Congratulations to The List - gave me my first job, always a lovely place to work for. It's really some achievement to last so long in such a difficult, changing market - well done to them.

There is a moment of hesitation and then my dog dives – 24kg of fox red labrador launching into Gourock outdoor pool – to join the splashy tumult.

Dogs of all shapes, sizes and swimming ability have come to the outdoor saltwater pool on Scotland’s west coast for what has become an annual fixture 👇🐕

This is so very frustrating. I was on the board of Lanternhouse for a few years, over the period of it surviving covid & reopening in its lovely purpose-built new building. There were so many challenges and issues, it never got the support it needed. Really really hope this doesn't come to pass.

Oh, I tend to think it's more common in highly commercial writing!

Writing fiction in the third person past tense is starting to feel as stubbornly anachronistic as making studio sitcoms with a laughter track.

we don’t need to talk about whether people are *really* or *inherently* racist, if they’re doing and saying racist things. I mean firstly: they clearly are! what you do is who you are! but also: it doesn’t really matter whether their hearts are racist if they’re happy to support racist politicians
