This is absolutely why I would support Proportional Representation because I'm a hybrid Labour & Green voter (Greens on the whole at local elections & Labour at the General election).

Labour really hasn't broken every single promise it has ever made.

It's only broken one from its 2024 manifesto, on levels of investment. It's achieved 18, 19 are on track and 22 are in progress. Out of 85.

Its a damned shame Gordon Brown wasn't able to play the media game back in the day when he was PM. I very doubt he would have been such an easy target for the rightwing media and maybe could have gone on for longer.

Two things can be true:
1. Very high marginal rates are bad
2. We shouldn't valorise or romaticise very well off people paying them

It is perfectly possible to redesign tax system so those on over £100k pay more on average, but never face ludicrous marginal rates likely to impact on their choices

It is may be 3x average pay but 62% tax rate on earnings over £100,000 and cliff edge removal of childcare subsidies limit aspirations of upper middle classes bit.ly/49arr4e misleading to call it ‘working hard’ not ‘being lucky and clever’. Many work very hard on £12.21/hour 48 hours a week or more
This tax trap is killing youthful aspiration
Little wonder the under-40s laud Margaret Thatcher: she valued hard work, unlike the rules that penalise them today

Y'days post: Populism and Economic Prosperity mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/10/popu...
We would expect populist governments to damage the economy. The evidence suggests that they do so in a big way. But we know from Brexit that the media typically nullifies the impact of this evidence on voters.

Mainstream political parties normally claim that populist parties, if they ever got to power, would damage the economy. We have clear evid...

What’s that Jeremy? Your private healthcare couldn’t save your life but the NHS could?

People need to think long and hard about voting for Reform, Farage openly says we need insurance based healthcare, but what about people who can’t afford it?

They die. It’s simple.

Journalistic shorthand is net migration "currently stands at 430,000": that was the last figure (Jan-Dec 2024) in May 2025

It is a fact - not a prediction- that it is currently lower. (2025 data visa shows down again). I can predict that will obvs be confirmed on Nov 27th in data *to June 2025*

The graphic with the title "Solutions against Misinformation" shows which interventions can target misinformation in three phases (before creation, before detection, after detection), categorized by type (Educating, Labeling, Providing Evidence, Deleting) and by expert agreement.

Kinnock is one of the finest proponents of progressive thought in this country and the best prime minister we never had.

In 2010, an interviewer told Neil Kinnock that the Labour Party "never used to understand aspiration".

Kinnock gave an absolutely brilliant answer that should be learned by heart by every Labour MP. (0.42 to 1.22)

Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, preserves independent redistricting over the long term, and lets the people decide.

So return your ballot today. Vote yes on 50.

Both knife crime and homicides are falling in London. This is thanks to our record funding in the Met, targeted police action and vital prevention work through London’s VRU. But there is still much more to do, which is why we won’t let-up in our work to build a safer London for everyone.
A graphic reporting homicides fall by more than a third since 2019.
