Who among Dem Senate can slap the cowards into line?

Chuck isn't up to the job, so who is?

The cheapest plan available to me (a Georgian) is over $1,000 a month. Healthcare is no longer an option for me. I will ration the medication I take for as long as I can and then I will wait to die.
So every freelancer you know is going to lose their insurance or be bankrupted by premiums because Schumer is an invertebrate

Importantly: the one thing they wanted was a fucking giant favor to the GOP in the midterms to begin with. As is usually the case, Dems opened negotiations with a capitulation to the GOPs favor, and then cave from there.
How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

I'm single. No kids, no claims, no pre-existing conditions. The cataclysmic leap from paying $50 a month to $1,228.28 a month is a level of devastation the depth of which I'm struggling to articulate. I wasn't going to be able to afford when I thought it was going up to $350 a month. And now...😵
I thought my new health insurance premium was going to be $350 per month until I got this letter informing me that it would be $1,228.28 PER MONTH. I CURRENTLY PAY $50. Is my math mathing? Is that.... a 2,356.42% increase?

2256.42%????

TWO THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED FIFTY SIX POINT FORTY TWO PERCENT😩

Its so fucking great that I haven't been able to buy any food yet this month because of not getting my SNAP, all so I can also lose my health insurance as well.

Quick lessons of the week:

MTG is still crazy, regardless of media sanewashing.

Sen Dems are particularly out of touch. They can't even read polling anymore.

I think it's the politics of it that's frustrating here. He's not demonstrating anything that speaks to voters who just don't have time for "reasonable" and not actual help.

He could have told them to get fucked and people would have lost their damn minds for "can't endorse" Chuck.

It seems politically pointless though. Like it doesn't demonstrate leverage or strength. It just looks foolish.

And perception matters!

If the leader cannot lead, then that still counts as a problem with leadership.
So yeah, Schumer is fucking awful. But there’s enough Democrats supporting this debacle that it’s obviously more than a one-guy problem. The party that consistently presents itself as the only bulwark against fascism keeps surrendering to fascism.

Billionaires don't make sense to me. Like don't you know how to spend your money? Or do you literally have more than you can spend and you don't give it away? What existential dread eats at your soul that you can't just cry it out and toughen up like the rest of us and then try to help?

This defies sanity. This is destructive towards society.
Chicago Public Library's budget cuts would mean losing HALF of the materials budget. It would mean losing 90 staff members.

Cop budget's fine, though.

I remember people saying they'd get the least pushback or guff from people if they said they were doing it because someone at home was sick. People didn't want to just let people take care of themselves, but if they see it as labor and sacrifice for someone else, then they can understand.
Sometimes when people ask me why I’m wearing a mask I say I’m traveling or have some important thing soon and can’t afford to get sick and miss it and that’s pretty much always true but I think it would be nice if it were more normalized to just say “I don’t want to get sick” and leave it at that

So now we don't have a Congress. How convenient for a king to effectively dissolve the legislative branch through his agents.
GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.

REPORTERS: 😳

KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

New — While some states have received SNAP benefits for November and USDA is supposedly pushing through all federal payments soon, that doesn’t erase the psychological terror of the last few weeks.

I spoke with 20+ SNAP recipients in 16 states about preparing for a possible future with no food:
The voices of SNAP
Recipients have become political pawns. They explained, in their own words, what Trump withholding funds has been like.

Following up on my last repost about turning off the “Rude” filter - there are lots of other “helpful” moderation filters that Bluesky just decided to turn on & it’s a bit of a search to turn them off (or at least turn the ones you want off). But definitely worthwhile to review your own settings!

The longer we tolerate this, the longer we will have tolerated it.
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

This is ALSO a media story.

Non-white, young, and low-income voters were misled about what Trump would do. Now they’re learning, and they hate it.
Dem gains in this week's elections erased the inroads Trump made with non-white, young, and low-income voters in 2024. In fact, the R-to-D shift from 24 to 25 is double Trump's gains from 20-24. Claims of a GOP political realignment have been highly exaggerated
