This is so lovely 🥲
We don't need a New You in this New Year, we just need you. You in your fullness, you in all your messy beauty, you with all your creative joy and honest heartbreak. You. You are the only you we'll ever have, and we are not us without you.

As we move into Hate Yourself Publicly Season, I also wish for us a year in which we have the courage to value ourselves for who we are & not hate ourselves for who we're not, a year in which we listen not to those who line their pockets with our insecurities, but to voices of tenderness & respect.

Politics isn’t Star Wars or professional wrestling. Key actors aren’t going to just turn and suddenly be your ally. That’s fantasy bullshit and people and groups have made millions selling it to people who think this is some kind of TV show.

It’s not. This is real life.

The radical has now been completely normalized.

There Is No Place For Us isn't just the best + most important book I read in 2025, it's one of the best in recent memory. @brian-goldstone.bsky.social brings such deep ethnographic attunement to each person & scene. A must-read for everyone, but uniquely so for fellow anthropologists.

After many years of reporting and writing, the day is finally here: THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US is out today.

I poured everything into this book, and I hope it ignites outrage at the fact that so many people in the richest nation on earth have been deprived of one of the most basic human necessities.

We haven't had an honest accounting or reckoning across any part of the political spectrum - left to right. One of the most disillusioning periods for me seeing people who claim Leftist politics ABSOLUTELY SPRINT to abandon the sick and vulnerable. It has rearranged a lot for me.

This has been the most challenging thing for me. I don’t expect anything of the ultra wealthy. They only care about themselves. But to see others encouraging and enabling that behavior and trying to prevent those with the most need from accessing resources, that’s a bitter pill.

But our country, our chance to build a future for our kids and grandkids is too precious.

We stay in the fight because it's a righteous one.

In America, where irony is dead, a hotel chain uses a policy denying shelter to local people, for fear of accidentally housing homeless persons…

To deny a reservation to the author of a much-lauded book on how American economic unfairness forces working people into homelessness.
A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.

When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.

This is outrageous.
