In Sicily we have a devastated eastern coastline and an entire town sliding into oblivion. Minimum €2bn damage to fix. Salvini refuses to use any of the €13.5bn set aside for the Messina Strait bridge. Tomorrow he is coming to view the devastation. Will be interesting to see the reception he gets.

Weakening safety regulations for nuclear power is a great short term move for the nuclear industry but likely will also end the future of nuclear.

If you think new nuclear is hard to move forward now (due mostly to its impossible economics) wait until there is another disaster.
EXCLSUVIE: The Trump administration has secretly rewritten nuclear safety rules and shared them with the companies they're meant to regulate, without making the new rules publicly available.

We've obtained a copy of the new rules and here's what we found.

The Trump administration has secretly rewritten nuclear safety rules
The rewrite was done to speed up the construction of a new generation of nuclear reactors. Critics warn it could compromise safety and public trust.

As the world quickly approaches 1.5C, researchers have a call in Nature to rethink the utility of temperature targets – and to potentially replace them with more actionable and precise targets around clean energy:
As we breach 1.5 °C, we must replace temperature limits with clean-energy targets
Nature - Actionable goals are needed to guide the world towards what needs to happen most quickly: shifting economies to clean energy sources.

As in the US, bad decisions by politicians are keeping coal power plants running in Australia, causing avoidable human deaths from air pollution today and locking in more from climate change. We need to learn how to regulate coal phase-out. Industry lobbying against gas phase-out will be 10x worse.

The EU‘s fight over the ‚combustion engine ban‘ was a waste of the public‘s attention. Performative politics. By 2035, collectors with special licenses may still want one, if they can pay for the fuel and find some last gas station. History doesn‘t proceed in a linear fashion.
