Sincerely not trying to be overly argumentative here, but what about the article was bad? I read through it, and it seemed very milquetoast to me. My sense is that people are mostly objecting to the headline, which they’re interpreting as being laudatory towards Kirk.

Either way, I agree when it comes to the fact that we don’t have an understanding of what Kirk’s assassination means yet. I suppose I’m just frustrated when people’s reflex response is to target journalistic outlets who, at least in my opinion, have gone out of their way to cover the issue before.

Alternatively, you could argue that the ability to make the claim that something is a “watershed” of political violence can only be credibly made by outlets that have dedicated resources to reporting on that specific issue well before the specific act of political violence has taken place.

Haha there are very few people more cynical than me. I haven’t followed Reuters coverage on the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and if they’ve reported on that poorly, they should be called on that. All I’m saying is that on the specific issue of political violence, they’ve been quite good.

I felt like it struck just the right tone: unflinching without being shrill, and grounded in facts without shying away from the feelings that the awful things discussed of course raise in people. I recommend it to any Canadian, from those who follow hockey avidly to those who have always avoided it.

This podcast docuseries about the dark side of Canadian hockey is something I learned a lot from when it aired in 2023. It didn’t stop me from enjoying the game, but it helped me to contextualize the game within these awful cultural trappings that aren’t discussed nearly enough.

On Canada-US relations, Carney’s tactics are exactly the opposite of what he campaigned on. No retaliation on increased steel/aluminum tariffs. Capitulation to the false fentanyl narrative with his border bill. Now killing the DST the night before it was going into force.

This isn’t to say whether a climb-down like the one on the DST is or isn’t the best tactic at the moment. It just feels worth noting that it’s not exactly what the country was sold a couple of months ago.
