I'm here to report that the federal layoffs have hit me personally. My 25-yr-old great niece worked for the Library of Congress. She's been laid off. Not furloughed, laid off. As in fired.

She lives less than a mile from me, & we are very close. I'm not a happy camper tonight.

Teen Son: Mama, I found something #genAI that you'll absolutely like.

Me: Yeah, what?

Son: youtu.be/bqH-GKVyryM?...

Not gonna lie, it speaks to my big band/blues soul and I listened to the whole deal...but only if Em gives consent.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Yes AND It was one of the first books (for kids) that I've ever seen handle micro aggressions with such grace and humor. @jerrycraft.bsky.social is a genius. Bonafide! #TLSkyChat.

A2: The New Kid by Jerry Craft. Worth it because it called attention to a healthy, loving Black family adjusting through awkwardness of middle school. It's worth protecting b/c it was a mirror for Black kids and NOT a trauma-vampire story for our culture. #TLSkyChat

A4: As a director of school librarians, I didn't have a library-but I advocate via my consultant business & website. I write articles for journals. I contribute chapters to books focusing on censorship. I tell my banned story in speeches. I lead by example w/a 24/7 threat of being banned. #TLSkyChat

A3: I served as IFC chairperson to put my knowledge on the frontline. Who's on my team? Any and all of you: librarian, neighbor or concerned citizen. How do I protect the kids: organized their voices/frustrstions into tangible organizations & encourage them to their socials to advocate. #TLSkyChat

100%! I have questions about the teeth in some of these laws and whether or not they will hold up in court BUT I still think taking a stand matters A LOT - if for no other reason than it helps people on the front lines of these battles feel less alone. #TLSkyChat
