even if she wasn't evil i'd still hate Rowling for the sheer amount of (entirely fair, if i'm being brutally honest as one myself!) reputational damage she's caused to "writer" as a flavor of person
So I can read something like, "Writers are a bunch of self-absorbed cowards" and think, "Hm, I suppose there are a lot of writers like that; I sure don't fit the stereotype," whereas "If the word 'writer' appears anywhere in the profile swipe left" would make me genuinely mad.

Whereas if you're talking about people in the plural, it seems more abstract and generally observational, therefore flexible.

I think there's a definite line between statements that strike me as "Yeah, that's fair to generalize about people in my category; I don't take offense; that doesn't apply to me specifically" vs statements clearly alleging that by belonging to the category at all I am obviously not worth a damn.
