Edith Renfrow Smith was born in Iowa two weeks before the start of World War I. She met aviator Amelia Earhart while an undergraduate at Grinnell College, where she became the first Black female graduate. After graduation, she came to Chicago. Mrs. Smith died at the age of 111.

Joe Ely, a pioneering figure in progressive Texas country music who collaborated and toured with The Clash and co-founded the Flatlanders, has died at 78. He died from health complications due to Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

New rankings by the nonprofit LeapFrog put Iowa 48th in the nation for hospital safety. Iowa is one of four states where no hospital received an "A" grade.

Went to a wildlife refuge looking for waterbirds. Saw a bunch but I did spend at least 30 minutes stalking a butterfly garden with at least 10 species of butterfly, like this Gulf Fritillary.
