Intro: My handle reflects my interests. Oaks are a keystone species, hosting more life forms than most other tree species. I'm encouraging others to do what I'm doing with my yard: plant and foster native trees, perennials, and annuals to provide habitat for birds, insects, etc.

First snow of the season, very sticky, made a fun pattern on the tree fence. (I lost a redbud to buck deer rubbing their antlers on the trunk, stripping the bark all the way around. So I planted another one. Not gonna happen again, nope.)

Demodex mites live in your facial pores and have lost some of the genes that respond to daylight. They cannot make their own melatonin, so they use the melatonin your skin releases at night as a cue to crawl out and mate on your face.

Some false reports are circulating that Mt. Rainier is suddenly showing seismic tremor activity — this is not true. The signal being referenced is actually radio interference, most likely due to rime ice buildup on the antenna of one of our seismic stations.

There were 92,400 Lego cutlasses inside the shipping container that fell off the Tokio Express back in 1997. This one was found in August by Laura Dale on a beach near Newquay some 28 years after it plummeted into the ocean.

Baby greens made it through a week of cold weather under the row cover. Heading into a week of mildness so I took the blanket off and watered them, covering with chicken wire to keep the critters away - knock on wood. #garden #gardening

I wish I had the right place for one of these Japanese maples but I don't. My neighbor does, though, and it's always so beautiful in the fall on a clear blue sky day. Hope you enjoy it too. #photography

Oh, man! I was watching a couple of Red-tailed Hawks soaring over Central Park's Conservatory Garden, when a solitary Crow decided to harass them! An aerial duel ensued, and I managed to get this shot of the hawk turning on the crow! 🛩️🛩️🛩️ #Hawks #CentralPark #birding

Winter greens are up and running! Going to be warm this week so no row cover, but it'll go back on when it gets cold again. For now it'll just have chicken wire to keep the groundhog from chomping it down to nothing. #garden #gardening

The little princess helped herself to some candy, with a loud and grateful "Thank You" after taking each one (took 6 or 7, which is fine, there were still some left this morning). They were all delighted at being able to take what they wanted. #Halloween
