Retired art conservator, active gardener, artist, vegan. I’m here on Bluesky for following news and humor. And food ideas. And birds, love birds. And dogs. Trees and native plants. Ok, lots of things.

Intro: My handle reflects my interests. Oaks are a keystone species, hosting more life forms than most other tree species. I'm encouraging others to do what I'm doing with my yard: plant and foster native trees, perennials, and annuals to provide habitat for birds, insects, etc.

How many followers I have isn't that important to me but boy does having 9.9k followers in stead of 10 annoy me ;)

Mystery photo - what's this? (I know, but just putting this out there for a fun time for those who might not be sure.)

Timeline freshener. Ice chunk rotating in the river. Upstate NY a few years ago.

I remain shocked by how much work was done after Katrina (subj of my diss) on evacuating pets in disasters relative to evacuating people without cars, or with disabilities, or with poverty, or elderly, or, or, or
I tell you what, Ring figured out exactly how to weaponize white people’s empathy in service to a corporately controlled surveillance state.

Tell them it will find your dog.

All good fun until someone says, "let's see how fast it can go"
Up at Silverwood Park in St Anthony, MN, they built an ice carousel. Drill a hole in the ice, put in an outboard motor, cut the ice in a big circle, fire up the outboard, ice carousel.

People do fun weird shit outside in Minnesota all winter long. Park was packed. It’s delightful here.

Walked to the river for sunrise, before the forecasted wind and cold arrives. Won't last long but getting out now will alleviate cabin fever. Might make cookies today.

Can you find the bird in one of these pics?

A dozen neighborhood kids were playing in the woods at the back of a city park just before sunset. No photo b/c privacy, but I can remember their fun back there, running and hiding and whatnot. Just good old unsupervised wildness happening in a benevolent way.

Lichen growing on a metal bench. I don't recall seeing them growing on much of anything besides rocks, bricks, concrete, or tree trunks, so this is a first for me. In northern Florida USA.

just a reminder: if fire hydrants near where you live are buried in snow after this week’s storms, it’s a mitzvah (and a gooooood workout!) to dig out around that hydrant so fire crews can get to it faster if need be.

It's easy to search to find your US congress members, and to click "contact" to send them a message.

I just did. Not a long message, but to the point. After writing the first one I just copied/pasted it into the other ones.

You can do it too.

So what can be done when the "armed militia" is acting on behalf of a renegade government that they're *supposed* to be protecting us from?

Rare white squirrel in the park. Not sure if it's albino (red eyes) or leucistic (black eyes) but still quite a sight!

These old live oaks are so "common" around here but each one is extraordinary. Contradiction I know, but that's how it is. #trees

Zoom in to see a flying mechanical bird toy. New to me, yet it looks like something Leonardo da Vinci invented centuries ago.

Two views of the same old tree, host of a community of multiple botanical beings. So much life going on up there. So many different kinds. And there has been for a long long time. Respect.

Cooked up two kinds of field peas at once, the Black-eyed and Blue Goose, seasoned with fresh ginger root and sage from my garden (plus some kombu), alongside two kinds of kale to which I added a touch of cider vinegar. Shared with family. Yum.

Lucky New Year, all! #ranchogordo
