At Wendy’s you can’t sub the chicken nuggets for an equivalent sandwich in their Biggie Bag combos. That’s Calvinism.
blueberrymill.bsky.social
yeah it's basically used as a synonym for stern, humorless, inflexible (a cousin is "Puritan"), and then you just attach a bunch more vibes to that and boom you get "Calvinism"

"Love your neighbor, love your God, save your soul and quit your job" - chant that has become a regular part of the Broadview demonstrations, according to the Rev. David Black, as reported by @jackjenkins.me

(about Tron: Ares)

I'm a simple guy. I see shiny hologram lights and clap

AV Club said it's a very pretty movie. I'm holding out hope the soundtrack kicks as much ass as Legacy's did

Grok is such a fucking weird name for an AI and seeing it next to "Ares" as a word makes it sound even more like the name of a cave troll

I was going to make a pun on "reporting for duty" and realized that would be a mistake.

"Faith without works is dead" really is the vibe and while this is just one example I found it a particularly striking rebuke of the idea that you can be Spiritually supportive of the poor or whatever while doing fuck-all

When was the last time a Catholic in Barron’s diocese has seen him?

What a thread.

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

On a simpler level I was also reflecting on the idea of fire's destructive power. Jesus burned under the cross' penalty, and He truly died, but He was not "consumed" not just in that He rose, but also in that atonement was made through an instrument that was not supposed to ever yield it.

The fire of the bush burns but does not consume. It looks like a kind of paradox that manifests the power of God. So I was thinking just now that the cross also looks like a paradox: the scandal of the Messiah being crucified, the Son of God dying, which yet is the "power of God" cf 1 Cor 1.

I don’t mind playing the academic game but in the end I became a scholar out of love for God, and there’s just not any getting around how, for me, the whole reason for being open and irenic and careful and curious and firm is a supernatural reason.

Ack. Came to a favorite coffee shop 1.5 hours ago to read but got wrapped up in social media and emails instead. A familiar story.

I work Friday–Sunday 2–9:30 so tomorrow's my last chance of the week for a free afternoon.

A lot going on here, but a religion note: DHS Assistant Sec. Tricia McLaughlin refers to Rev. Black as a "pastor" here — using quotation marks.

It's a notable slight against a faith leader's status, as Black is, in fact, an ordained minister of a church operating within the Presbytery of Chicago.
This footage is from almost a month ago. What this clipped video doesn’t show is that these agitators were blocking an ICE vehicle from leaving the federal facility—impeding operations.

Over and over again, law enforcement ordered these agitators to move off of federal property so the vehicle could move. Law enforcement verbally warned these agitators that they would use force if they did not move and stop impeding operations. They did not comply.

Shortly after, rioters began throwing rocks, bottles and launching fireworks at the law enforcement officers on the roof.

At the time of this incident, this facility held criminal illegal aliens including gang members, drug traffickers, and other violent criminals. Obstructing law enforcement puts officers, detainees and the public at risk. If you are obstructing law enforcement you can expect to be met with force.

And, as an aside, this is the same “pastor” who flipped
@Sec_Noem
and our team the bird when we were there last week.
