Hey all, I'm trying to get a baseline for how good people are at detecting whether fiction is AI-generated or human-written (most of the research on this is for nonfiction and my hypothesis is we're better with fiction).

If you have time, give it a try?

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

been having a whole lot of “why i study what i do” convos lately. academics are such nerds, and we *remain* nerds despite all the things! we find real life-giving joy in being nerdy.

and i’ll always love that about us. 💜

Here’s the things I believe to be true:

- we need intellectual centers to study phenomena shaping our world, so we can better understand how their origins & their impact, with the perspective of time.

- Creator/influencer studies is a growing field that does that work.

- that is not what this is.

Hey nerds. Let's try and remember to use alt text when we can ok? Not just for art. For those memes, screenshots, funnies, day to day photos too. GIFs and videos too. (If you have your own website, you should check your images for alt text there too)

I cannot emphasize this enough:

The regime has overextended itself. It is vulnerable to protest and dissent.

They have not consolidated power and we are entirely capable of keeping them from doing so.

Doomers are not realists.

Just wanted to let you know that the ghosts are starting to balloon in for Halloween.

A pumpkin balloon carries a ghost in its basket. The moon is full. White gouache on black paper.

We are not witnessing the collapse of Democracy. We are living through the solidification of a fascist regime. We are not spectators. This is at our doorstep and like frogs in boiling water, we have normalized the thing trying to hurt us. Because the tactic is overwhelm, exhaust, and divide.

I'm pretty sure some of the black and white faculty headshots I've handled weren't black and white for aesthetic purposes.

Related note to a related note: there's a generic brand of chocolate mini donuts that could often be found in my local convenience stores. They were in a package of eight and were a pretty good price. The company uses the same package, but more expensive with only 6 and they rattle around similarly.
moviessilently.bsky.social
They really really REALLY did not think that through, did they?

(On a related note, five granola bars rattling around in a box designed for six somehow has made me redline)

Accessibility is one of those things that can feel a bit overwhelming when you start learning about it, so I had a conversation with @sarasoueidan.com where we talked all about it, including what it is, why it matters, how to get started learning more about it, and a lot more.

The Amphora of Great Intelligence (AGI)

#webcomic #krita #miniFantasyTheater
A comic strip in four panels:

1. A bird's-eye view of a giant amphora the size of a building with closed eyes and a closed mouth engraved on it. Using scaffolding, a community of wizards climbed up and are throwing all their books into it, to fill its content.
> Wizards: All our grimoires for the Amphora of Great Intelligence!

2. A ground level view at the bottom of the giant amphora. This time, the wizards bring tree trunks, cut down nearby trees, and throw them into a large fire to boil the giant amphora.
> Wizards: All our forests for the Amphora of Great Intelligence!

3. A gathering of all the wizards below the imposing amphora which has now opened its glowing eyes and mouth slightly. The crowd of wizards at its feet applauds:
> Wizards: Amphora of Great Intelligence, our world is dying, share your knowledge with us!

4. Same shot, as the amphora responds with joyful and amused eyes. The wizards are confused by the answer...
> Artificial Intelligence: According to geologists, you should eat at least one small rock per day.
> Wizards: ... ... ...

some princes don’t become kings 👑🗡️

#art #oc
An illustration of a drow facing forward with his eyes closed. He wears formal attire, a high-collared shirt with metal accents and an overcoat with a faintly luminescent metallic spiderweb motif running down the front edges. A pair of hands with long black nails lowers a black crown toward his head. The background is a soft grey gradient with circular silver rings framing the character.

Still one of the best incarnations of the character.

I thought a good while about doing this given how everyone is hard up these days, and I also *don't* like asking for money. But here we are. Studying is expensive, and for Reasons, I can't take a loan this round.

Please donate if you can! Otherwise, sharing helps.
