An attempt at pedantry, meaningless and incorrect.

The term podium in modern parlance is a synonym for lectern, as acknowledged by Merriam-Webster. This also accounts for the fluidity of language over time.

But also, even by strictly archaic definitions, our podiums didn't always have lecterns.

I would write cases literally on the bus to the tournament. I refused to take my prep time in matches because it also denied my opponent half the total prep time. I was strung out on caffeine every goddamn minute of it. I repeat: it is a miracle I turned out to not really enjoy fighting and arguing.

I don't talk about this much but I was an absolute fucking monster at Lincoln-Douglas debate and I am certain a large part of it was just me being able to go "fuck it we ball" and slam shit out with no prep time. It is a complete miracle that I did not turn into a particular brand of streamer bro.

So I did my cross ex, went up to present the Neg, and had a wholly different case that was basically immune to the hyper-specific version he was targeting. I watched the lights in his eyes die out as he knew he had already lost the championship.

After I won I threw up like 3 red bulls.

This worked primarily because I was on Neg against both his classmate and him, so he had his classmate's notes on my case... but also, Aff goes first in LD. So he went up to the podium all smug thinking he had me cornered from the very beginning. He had clearly tailored his arguments to my old case.

My craziest version of this was at a state high school debate tournament, going into finals, realized the dude I was up against was classmates with someone else I debated, so knew my whole case. Rewrote the whole thing in 30 minutes to specifically counter what I thought his counter would be. Won.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
