Very cool evening of stories and songs from Steve Wynn. Loved hearing him play “That’s What You Always Say,” “When You Smile,” “The Days of Wine and Roses,” “Merrittville,” and other classic Dream Syndicate tunes.

If you live near Columbus, there’s still time to get out tonight and see Steve Wynn play a rare U.S. solo show!

Like with pizza, pie is very much a yes-and food for me. Apple pie? Yes, and pecan? Yes, and peach? Yes, and lemon meringue? Yes, and pumpkin? Yes, and sweet potato? Yes, and cherry? Yes, and blueberry? Yes, and key lime? Yes, and coconut cream? Yes, and peanut butter? Yes and yes and yes and yes

Two or three follow-ups to DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS. Might have to mess with the series timeline or find someone younger to replace Denzel as Easy Rawlins, though.
What sequel would you command into existence if you were president-king?

I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but the page reloaded half a dozen times and then crashed completely before I could even make it a quarter of the way through. Hurray for the modern web.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY is getting re-released this week, and to celebrate I wrote about one of my favorite subjects: music documentaries. Having watched a ton and helped to make a few, I tried to figure out what makes a good music doc good.

Such a fun and informative read — @johnlingan.bsky.social really outdid himself with this one. The best thing I can say about the book is that it has already made me a better listener, helping me hear new things in music while putting into words what I sensed but could not articulate.

I guess you have to “unleash” a record before you can “drop” it, otherwise it will just dangle helplessly
Relatedly, I never wish to see any kind of music PR mailout saying that a band or singer has 'unleashed' something ever again. You have unleashed nothing. You have simply hit 'send' on a message.
if I had the mysterious power to do one very petty and generally meaningless thing I would ban the word "reveals" from entertainment headlines and the word "must" from fantasy book cover text

Viral warnings of planned ICE raids on churches have pastors worried
(RNS) — Rumors and viral reports about potential ICE raids have immigrant church leaders worried about their congregations. DHS says it doesn’t have plans to raid churches — but won’t rule it out.

A few historical pageturners I’ve enjoyed in recent years:

Ben Macintyre — The Spy and the Traitor (and pretty much anything else he writes)
Ilyon Woo — Master Slave Husband Wife
Jason Fagone — The Woman Who Smashed Codes
Peter Houlahan — Norco ‘80
William Hogeland — Autumn of the Black Snake
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

Newspaper copy editor was my first Real Adult Job, and it was so much fun — even with shitty hours and pay. I (quietly) saved a lot of asses in those days, so believe me when I say how utterly stupid it is to eliminate your publication’s entire copy desk.
Stop laying off copy editors and then complaining about errors and lack of reader trust challenge
