![José Alberto “Pepe” Mujica Cordano[a] (20 May 1935 – 13 May 2025) was a Uruguayan politician, revolutionary, farmer, and hero who served as the iconic, moderately left-wing 40th president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. Widely known and venerated for his fiery, unwavering dedication to both his humble lifestyle and his progressive values, he spoke openly and straightforwardly of his anti-consumerist ideals (and in more-or-less every meaningful way, seemed to embody them as an actual sort of ~ideal~ ideal himself, although I realize I’m no scholar of South American, or even Uruguayan, politics, so yes, please correct me if I’m somehow mistaken, but please be gentle).
During José Mujica’s tenure as the President of Uruguay from 2010-2015, he famously turned his longtime, (hella, hella) bonafide progressive values into progressive policy and, finally, national law, as he, for instance, legalized both marijuana and same-sex marriage in a small-ish, but highly literate, educated, engaged, and influential South American country.
