~40% of the ENTIRE corn crop of the US is used to make ethanol. This gets blended with gasoline to power well under 10% of our vehicle miles. If we converted 100% of our vehicles to EVs installing solar on a small fraction of the land this corn is grown on would power them all.
US domestic corn use graph from 1980 to 2020. The orange bar representing "Alcohol for fuel use" (aka ethanol) starts growing in early 2000s, explodes before 2010 and stays huge through the graphs 2022 end. This explains most of the increased corn production in the US.

MIT’s response to The Compact invitation
The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core beliefs. That scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

If you are willing to throw away entire groups of people to protect your insular strategy that will only protect you instead of protecting everyone then I don’t want your leaders and I sure as hell don’t want to be associated with you.

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Trump is taking money from universities that enroll large numbers of Latino students and funneling it to high-profile HBCUs. It’s a cynical ploy designed to divide marginalized communities. From Naomi Bethune: trib.al/YjYbSmg
Competing for Crumbs
While adding funding for historically Black colleges and universities, Trump’s Education Department is simultaneously cutting funding to colleges that primarily serve minorities.

SCOOP: Last year, Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin's Creed game set during Reconstruction. Was to feature a Black Assassin who, among other things, fought the rise of the Klan

Sources: Leadership nixed it over concerns re: U.S. political climate, backlash to Yasuke

For me I struggle with that just because it tends to happen at such a deep level for me. Like, I can’t explain why folk artist A’s vocals connect to the deepest parts of my soul while folk artist B’s vocals sound boring to me. If I can’t explain it to myself it’s even harder to explain it to others

Saw a quote from an anonymous G5 coach about how their school and UNC kept running into each other on the recruiting trail and that this was how said coach knew UNC would suck this season because no competitive P4 school would be going after so many of the same guys. So, not promising on recruiting

Republicans just removed Miami Beach's famous pride crosswalks. They could have painted them, but instead used bulldozers to destroy the bricks. Pride crosswalks are a tiny, symbolic gesture. But they are still important symbols of the political climate.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

In a just world this would lead to the end of the academic and medical careers of everyone involved who had even an inkling of knowledge about the methodology, and probably even the ones who didn’t. This is a horrific breach of academic standards even before you get to everyday fucking morals

Oslo University Hospital caught using trans patients' journals for research purposes:
- Without the patients' consent to participate in research
- Affecting minors
- 1700 of them
- Taking highly sensitive information from said journals

This is a HUGE breach.

You can't fix offsets, because they're not really broken

They are designed from the ground up as a way for polluters to falsify climate action, and for disgustingly rich bankers to divert funds away from frontline communities

As long as fossil fuels exist, offsets will exist

Are Carbon Offsets Fixable?
