Causeway Pride Statement on the Supreme Court Ruling Causeway Pride welcomes the recent Supreme Court ruling as an important milestone for the rights and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ young people across Northern Ireland, and indeed for all children especially those whose beliefs do not align with a Christian worldview. The decision, which found that the current approach to Religious Education and collective worship in controlled schools is not sufficiently neutral or balanced, affirms a fundamental principle: that every child has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and belief, and that state funded education must respect the diversity of families and identities that make up our society. It is important to us to state clearly that we are not anti Christian, nor do we view this ruling as a rejection of Christianity or its role in many people’s lives. We wish to pay sincere tribute to All Souls Church, Christians at Pride, and countless others within faith communities who have taken genuine steps towards healing old wounds, building bridges, and demonstrating that faith and LGBTQIA+ inclusion can coexist with love and solidarity. Their presence, compassion, and public witness have shown how powerful and positive faith can be when it honours the dignity of all people.

Today, a representative of Mams4TransNI, in collaboration with Nest and Causeway Pride, met with Baroness Hilary Cass, author of the Cass Review, as part of the ongoing review into gender identity services in Northern Ireland. Our representative attended in a personal capacity as a previous member of the Liaison Panel into Gender Services, ensuring that the insights and lived experiences of families and young people in Northern Ireland were meaningfully represented during the discussion. We are grateful for the opportunity to engage in this important process and for the continued dedication of the other former panel members who also attended and indeed all those who advocate for better, safer, and more accessible services for trans and gender-diverse people We will issue a further and more detailed statement once we have had time to reflect on the discussions, review the information shared during the meeting, and update the families who so bravely entrusted us with their personal stories to inform our advocacy.

Across Ireland, Britain, and the United States, the Left is finding its strength anew. From rent strikes to climate marches, from trade unions to queer collectives, people are coming together to reclaim politics for the many not the few. The tide is turning towards justice, compassion, and community. Here at home, we see that same spirit burning bright. In Northern Ireland, we know what it means to fight for equality against the odds to build solidarity across difference and to imagine a future free from fear. Our movements are connected: queer liberation, workers’ rights, housing justice, climate action, none can be won alone, but all can be won together. Yet we also know the struggle isn’t over. Across the world, reactionary forces are pushing back against trans rights, against migrants, against the planet itself. That’s why moments like this matter: they remind us what’s possible when we refuse to give up. So today, we celebrate and we organise. Because Pride is protest, solidarity is power, and the movement for justice is alive and unstoppable. The Left is rising. The people are uniting. And the fight for liberation goes on.

We stand in full solidarity with Lucina Schynning and Krystal Queer after the disgusting homophobic attack they were subjected to in Cork. What happened to them is horrifying and it’s a reminder of the violence and hatred our community still faces every day, just for being visible, proud, and queer. No one should ever be attacked for existing. The fact that bystanders laughed, filmed, and encouraged this assault shows just how deep the rot of queerphobia runs. Silence and inaction in the face of hate make people complicit. This isn’t an isolated incident it’s part of a pattern. Across this island, queer and trans people are being targeted, harassed, and assaulted. From the streets to social media, hate is being normalised while those in power look the other way. We refuse to accept that. Causeway Pride stands shoulder to shoulder with our drag family and every queer person who’s been made to feel unsafe. We send love and rage! Love for our community, rage at the systems that keep failing us. We call for: A full investigation into this attack and accountability for those responsible. Real action on hate crime prevention and reporting not more empty words. Solidarity from allies (especially politicians) speak up when you see hate, step in, don’t stay silent. Continued joy and defiance from our community because queer joy is resistance. As Lucina said, “We are going to keep enjoying ourselves and being very openly queer.” That’s exactly what we’ll keep doing loudly, proudly, and together. Hate has no place here. Although those of us in Northern Ireland do not have a vote in this election, we celebrate this historic moment and what it represents for the island as a whole. President Connolly has long been a passionate advocate for equality, inclusion, and social justice. Her record of standing up for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people, for women, and for marginalised communities gives hope to many across Ireland north and south that compassion, courage, and fairness remain at the heart of public life. Her election sends a powerful message that leadership grounded in empathy and principle continues to thrive on this island. We also wish to express our deep gratitude to outgoing President Michael D. Higgins for his years of dedicated service. His steadfast commitment to human rights, his moral clarity on global justice issues including his outspoken support for the people of Gaza and his unwavering advocacy for equality have left a profound legacy that will be felt for generations. We are furious. Another life has been stolen, another trans or gender non-conforming person pushed past breaking point by a system that does. not. care. Let’s be absolutely clear: this is not some isolated tragedy, not some “unforeseeable” heartbreak. This is the inevitable, preventable result of deliberate neglect. We have been shouting about this for years, screaming into the void, and still, nothing changes. We knew this would happen. And we know it will happen again, because those in power have chosen not to act. The so-called “blocker ban” was the final straw for many of us, a cruel, ideological assault dressed up as “concern.” There’s nothing compassionate about denying people the healthcare they need to survive. But the truth is, this system was already broken long before that ban. Gender-affirming healthcare in the UK has been left to rot, underfunded, understaffed, and deliberately obstructed. Waiting lists stretch not for months, but for years. People are humiliated by outdated, dehumanising systems, forced to “prove” their identity to strangers who treat them like problems to be managed instead of lives to be saved. Every single day, trans people are denied care, denied dignity, denied safety, and every single day, this cruelty drives more of our community to the edge. And in Northern Ireland, it’s even worse. We have no functioning gender identity service to speak of. People are left stranded, forced to go private if they can afford it, or left to suffer indefinitely if they can’t. Sinn Féin, Alliance, the SDLP, and the UUP have all failed us. Every single one of them. They’ll show up to Pride, they’ll take their photo ops, they’ll tweet their “support,” but when it comes to actually funding services, standing up to Westminster, or protecting trans people’s lives, they vanish. Empty words and rainbow logos don’t save lives. Silence and inaction kill, just as surely as hateful laws do . . And let’s stop pretending any of this is about “concern” for young people. It’s not. It’s about power, control, and moral panic. It’s about a government, a media, and a healthcare system across the UK that do not value trans lives, that see us as something to be debated, restricted, or erased. It’s about a society that treats our existence as expendable. We are done being quiet. We are done watching people die while politicians pat themselves on the back for “balanced discussion.” We are done pretending this is anything but institutional cruelty. We are tired of vigils. We are tired of mourning people who should still be here. We are tired. of watching our friends and siblings die because the care that could have saved them was locked behind bureaucracy, hostility, and hate. This isn’t tragedy, it’s policy. Every single delay. Every appointment denied. Every headline dripping with manufactured fear. Every smug politician who chooses cowardice over compassion. They all have blood on their hands. Every day that proper, timely gender-affirming healthcare remains unavailable in Northern Ireland, in England, in Scotland, and in Wales, more lives are at risk. We are heartbroken. We are furious. And we will not be silent. We owe it to those we’ve lost, and to every trans person still fighting to survive, to keep shouting, to keep fighting, until this country treats trans healthcare as the emergency it is. Trans lives are not expendable. This has to stop.

The SDLP has utterly failed the trans community. Let’s be real: when it came to the puberty blocker ban, the SDLP didn’t just stay silent they sided with the oppressors. They refused to support Gerry Carroll’s motion in Stormont, choosing cowardice over courage. That’s not opposition. That’s complicity. We’ve heard directly from SDLP sources that if they’d been part of the Executive, they would have voted for the ban. And everything they’ve done (or rather, failed to do ) since the ban came into force only proves it. Not a single meaningful action. Not a word of real solidarity. More or less silence while trans kids are thrown under the bus. And now, they’re trying to save face with this pathetic bit of PR in Belfast Live. Instead of condemning the ban, they spin and waffle, trying to sound supportive without actually saying anything. It’s cynical, it’s hollow, and it’s insulting. Meanwhile, People Before Profit, the Greens, and the Socialist Party have made their positions crystal clear. They’ve shown up, spoken out, and taken action. They’ve stood with trans people when it mattered. The SDLP? They’ve proven they’ll sell out trans rights the second it’s politically convenient. Don’t let them pretend otherwise. Trans people deserve real allies! Not cowards in fancy dress who’ll happily look the other way while young people’s lives are put at risk.
