My grand unified theory of suburbia is that camera doorbells are like SUVs, they provide an illusion of security while making you more paranoid
“Camera doorbells are social cancer as a technology, breaking down social solidarity and further encouraging people to see strangers with suspicion.”
Christmas is coming, and the Black Friday sales signal we’re in peak gift-buying season.

When you’re picking out gifts for friends and family this year, there’s a whole slew of tech products that are better to avoid. I put together a guide to help you through it.

The kid who told me at the start of the season that he wanted to work on his confidence came off the bench this morning, missed his first shot, and then swished four perfect three-pointers in a row. Whole team went wild for him. Those good vibes might sustain me for days.

I understand the diplomatic reasons why we don’t just send this man home, but surely we can stop inviting him to public events or reporting every time he scolds and gaslights us.

On my way to the office this morning I watched a Subaru driver blow through the red light at the new crosswalk lights by Scotia Square, and on my lunchtime walk I saw a guy in a Ford F150 texting and driving. Bonus: he had a parking ticket tucked under his wiper 🫠 #Halisky

This is very well-written, and I am firmly on Team Hater.
I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.

i think online gambling is a cancer that is spreading throughout our society, it was a horrible mistake to de-regulate it, and we desperately need to crack down on it again
i can’t talk about sports gambling anymore without sounding like a crank but i do believe legalized sports gambling is like 15-20% responsible for our current dystopia
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

I don't know if men in trucks are actually the worst offenders at blowing through crosswalks or if it just feels that way, but they're definitely the least likely to be sorry about it. No "whoops" nod or wave, just a dead-eyed stare emphasizing that you don't matter to them at all

I knew really young that I wanted to be a writer, but reading Alistair MacLeod's short story "The Boat" at 15 is the first time I remember being absolutely gutted by the power of perfect sentences and thinking, "I need to figure out how to do that."
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Convincing you to read my novel with the first sentence. Share yours if you want.

This is the opening of THE VANISHED ONES.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

My favourite mug that I use every day just split all the way down the side and across the bottom while I was filling it with tea. I am not OK.

I had a kid ask me in a school visit this week if I like writing and my answer was absolutely yes. Sure, it’s hard sometimes, but the act of creating is joyful and life-giving.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Considering that Rogers glitched out for a whole lot of us in the late innings of the biggest game of the year, this seems like a reasonable deal.
I think Rogers should celebrate the Jays by giving their subscribers a free month of service.
The Toronto #BlueJays gave us arguably the closest #WorldSeries in modern history, and the most fun and inspiring playoff run I can remember in any sport. I LOVE THAT TEAM, and 100% believe #TORONTO should have a HUGE CELEBRATION ANYWAY, to thank the team, fans, city and COUNTRY for a legendary run!

My 16-year-old decided weeks ago to have his birthday party tonight, so there are 6 extra boys in the house. We have a ton of candy and 10 pounds of chicken wings going in the oven soon. I just overheard one kid explaining Wins Against Replacement (WAR) to the others. We are ready for baseball.

I am not great at self-promo but it dawned on me today that LET THE MONSTER OUT is literally the perfect #middlegrade book for this season. Baseball, scary stuff, the value of teamwork, and a fearless upstart pitcher as the main character. What more could you want?

I seriously think the Jays are a great and timely model of healthy masculinity. Selfless devotion to the common good, positive affection (they hug a lot), not a lot of ego, and there's room to be hyper-competitive and possibly unhinged (Max Scherzer) without being toxic. They are good!
“The way that we see the #BlueJays being presented as a friendly, inclusive, cohesive unit, which is really lovely, is also speaking volumes on what's happening globally and politically in those two different countries, where we're not seeing that inclusivity.”

I really want the Jays to win in 6 just so they become the first team to win the World Series on Halloween and we get to enjoy a bunch of costumed fans in the pictures and replays for years to come.
