Because looking back, I actually learned a lot in school. Some of the things people say they don’t know is because they weren’t paying attention or didn’t retain the info 🥴 The rise of state testing and No child left behind is where things really go downhill.
I’ll tell you this: whatever black history you thought may have been silenced in schools while we were growing up, it’s exponentially worse in 2026.

It’s a big reason why when I got to college and all those suburban Black kids were tryna out Black each other with all the Hotep nonsense I was rolling my eyes. Because I had outgrown all that by then. We read the Autobiography of Malcolm X in 10th grade.

I definitely think it’s a consequence of a lack Black Community (church, family, neighbors) and not supplementing that learning at home, casually or intentionally.

In predominantly black cities, PRIOR TO GENTRIFICATION, the education goes past the household. It is infused in every aspect of of the community. Schools. Street festivals. We celebrated Juneteenth for decades in Richmond way before I knew the history of it we called it June Jubilee.

Was born in Queens, but moved out to Long Island at 9. Still know all the major black figures.
Parents have to be VERY intentional about that education outside of the house.
