(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

If we want to undermine Israel's attempts to take over Palestinian land and deny them their sovereignty, one of the best and most just ways to do that is to make sure Jews are safe everywhere, around the world.

Obviously Palestinians in Gaza are facing the most immediate threat to their lives and safety and need to be prioritized in this current moment, but we can walk and chew gum at the same time and we've got to here, because antisemitism has such long, deep, deadly roots.

One thing I find incredibly disheartening is the way global antisemitism emboldens Israel's violence against Palestinians and then in turn Israel's violence against Palestinians emboldens global antisemitism. It's this horrible, deadly, vicious cycle.

Honestly as a kid who struggled to enjoy anything I wasn't doing well at, I have so much admiration for your kid self! How wonderful that you could just have fun at the bowling alley and not feel like you had to be the best to get anything out of it!

Before your kid learns to talk, finding out what's wrong when they're in pain is a total guessing game.

Then they learn to talk and can tell you where it hurts.

Then their vocabulary outpaces their medical knowledge and they say stuff like "my bones are flickering" and it's back to square one.

Imo you also need to take into account that, in 2025 far more than previous years, right wing extremists can rely on the state to carry out many of their preferred forms of violence and intimidation on their behalf.

"My parents kidnapped my kids, is my wife overreacting?" Buddy, I would have called the police!

Dear Care and Feeding,

My parents have always had some issues with respecting boundaries that my wife “Mia” and I set for our two boys, ages 5 and 7, but last weekend they did something that has my wife ready to cut them off for good.

My parents were scheduled to take the kids on Saturday morning and have them back by dinnertime while Mia and I attended the bar mitzvah of a friend’s son.

When we got back in the late afternoon, we received a text with pics of my parents and our kids at a famous aquarium—one that is a plane-ride away from our home! Apparently my parents decided to surprise the boys. They had the trip in the works since we asked them to watch the boys—without clearing it with my wife and me.

Once we saw the pictures, Mia called them, incensed, and demanded they return with the kids immediately. My parents said they’d be back Sunday evening, and then pretended their battery was dying and ended the call. We didn’t hear from them again until they were ready to board the plane the next day.

Mia has been beyond furious and is adamant that my parents lose all access to the boys. While I realize my parents should have consulted us about going on the trip with the kids, I really think this is an overreaction. The kids had the time of their lives. Neither of them have any medical issues that would preclude a spur of the moment trip, and my parents are two caring, responsible adults. How can I convince my wife that going nuclear is not the answer?
