In self-interest but also general interest, folks: Black Friday is coming up, and small publishers/independent creators will always be a better choice than megacorps.

When the sales drop, please remember that!

Alright, for kicks let's hear some of your favorites for "short and excellent" from living authors.

Okay, because I need to try and re-spark some writing community joy after… *gestures at everything* how about a revisit on a way you can absolutely support authors you love for zero dollars: by dropping a low-stress, three-sentence review somewhere.

In Morrow County, healthy adults were coming down with unexplained medical conditions, including diseases that usually afflicted the elderly.

In a survey of 30 homes, at least 25 miscarriages and a half dozen people living with one kidney were reported.

If you like an author's work, the best thing you can do is buy it. The second best thing you can do is ask your local library to buy it. Or, do both!
A reminder that the median book deal for a debut author in the UK is £7000, paid over 12-18 months. (from 2022 Society of Authors report). Some of your favourite writers are struggling. societyofauthors.org/2022/12/06/a....

Science will often take you to unexpected and delightful places. In this study, researchers hypothesized that riders in a crowded subway car would be more likely to offer their seat to a pregnant person if there were someone in the subway car dressed as Batman 🧪🦇

This is very sad news, but I am glad to see that The Deadlands will continue.

Read this and then: support the zines and publishers you love. It is tough, rough times for small publishers and zines. Do what you can to help them continue their good work.

Charles De Lint has a story where a character struggles about a decision in an ongoing-narrative dream. Another character tells her she's right to care, because even if the *dream* isn't real, *she* is -- her decisions are hers, are HER.

I keep thinking about this in the context of AI usage.
Some of y'all reply to stuff with things I wouldn't say to people I actually knew well. I have to wonder - is it because you don't think of the person you're replying to as a full and real human? Is it just intense parasocial behavior? Or are y'all just that weird and rude always?

I tried to do what my good friend LP is doing and finish my bachelors degree as a working professional. I failed, but if I’d had this community back then, it would have meant everything to have this happen. It would mean everything now to see my friend get to do this. Let’s share far and wide, ok?

those of us laid off from Teen Vogue were really fortunate to complete our fundraising goal — the laid-off staffers at VIBE deserve the same support, as Black media outlets and journalists continue to be targeted and discriminated against in “austerity” measures
It was announced on October 16, 2025 that VIBE was "joining forces" with Rolling Stone. As a result, the majority of VIBE employees were laid off. If you have the means to give, this team could use the support! www.gofundme.com/f/support-vi...

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

My brain to me at 4am today: "psst. hey. HEY. Your ID still lists you as an organ donor. But for a few years now you've have a blood condition that's transmissible & can cause anaphylaxis, right? So if you were to DIE, like, RIGHT NOW, and your organs were donated ...people could DIE."

This one's been on my mind today. The main character keeps waking up after losing time, and has to parse the notes his past self left to say "this is who you are." But maybe the person writing the notes has left something out.

Can highly recommend:
• Premee Mohamed's Beneath the Rising trilogy (interdimensional apocalypse threatens, genius sociopath inventor & her bff try to solve, things go VERY sideways)

Halloween may be over, but we're still feeling spooky!

So, how about a bumper website exclusive #stillspooky sale of our spookiest titles for only 0.99 each? Shop the sale: geni.us/Solarissale

Titles available vary by your country of origin. Ends on 24th November 2025 at 23:59 GMT.
