I encountered a fungus puffball today during the #Agron635 Soil and Water Conservation class. All the students were busy doing infiltration measurements with mini disk infiltrometers across our site, so I had to record a video for them. #fungi #soil

This! I am a sustaining member of my local NPR and PBS stations, a subscriber to my local newspaper, and a few other groups that do excellent journalism (e.g. Wired for their reporting in Doge).

It seems there are two main reasons things haven’t gone completely to shit in the US: 1. Lawyers and the courts; 2. Journalists and the media. Most of us can’t do anything about the first, but we can support journalism. Stop complaining about paywalls and subscribe to news & donate to public media.

Every mention of Beri Weiss in the news makes me think of this beer first, and I want to keep it that way. It's not a great beer, but it's better than the news. #BeriWeiss #BerryWeiss #Leinenkugels

Here's an example. LinkedIn lets you share a metric comparing you to CEOs. CEOs are leaders. Good leaders hire the smartest people.

🏅 I’m smarter than 95% of CEOs today!

I've been playing LinkedIn's games lately, especially "Zip". It's weird that it compares your performance and says stuff like "you're smarter than 75% of CEOs". I could see why LinkedIn would be biased, but I don't think we as a civilization should hold CEOs as the standard bearers of intelligence.

My attitude is salty today. Perfect timing to get an email from Pearson about textbooks for my classes so I can reply and tell them why they're terrible!

If anyone wants to join me in calling out NPR for victim blaming in this story, this is at the bottom of the article.
Screen shot of text that reads: "This story was edited by Meghan Keane. The visual editor is Beck Harlan. We'd love to hear from you. Leave us a voicemail at 202-216-9823, or email us at LifeKit@npr.org."

Imagine if NPR had actually talked to safe streets advocates for this story and learned how the solutions to drivers killing people is not, in fact, victim blaming
You've heard of defensive driving — driving practices to help you stay safe on the road, like reducing your speed in bad weather or signaling before switching lanes. But what about defensive walking and cycling?

I've been hit by drivers three different times as a pedestrian and once riding a bike. In all instances I was in a crosswalk/bike path crossing. I'm a large man. I'm not hard to see. Unless people are diddling their phone while driving a 3-ton death machine.

Cell phone use by drivers should carry the same penalties as driving while intoxicated since the reaction time of using a phone or being under the influence is the same.

“I use it for brainstorming.” is quickly becoming my most hated pro-AI statement.

YOU TOOK YOUR BRAIN OUT OF THE EQUATION. THAT IS NOT BRAINSTORMING.

If I lived in Michigan I would totally use deep snow as a justification for buying a fat tire bike.
colbydigssoil.bsky.social
Lol. Honestly, with studded tires on my Surly Skid Loader, I'm much more confident riding a bike in the winter than I am driving a car with "all season" tires. I can't really justify winter car tires in Kansas, but a second wheel set with studded tires for my Surly was 100% worth it.

It's a shame I couldn't watch the second half because CBS decided I'd rather watch the Steelers/Patriots game. Seriously, what channel switches broadcasts halfway through a game?

lol, I think I missed that one.

Also, the jar test takes a long time. Texture by feel is minutes at most and is fairly accurate, even with minimal training.

Yeah, I don't know who runs these subs, but they don't come anywhere close to realizing their potential
colbydigssoil.bsky.social
The r/soil subreddit has a crazy number of posts of people using a jar test to determine what their soil texture is. I wonder why laypeople go with that test instead of just doing texture by feel. It's not difficult. I don't get it.
A screenshot of a Reddit post of someone asking what their soil texture is based on a jar test with a picture of soil particles settled in a jar.
