Conversion therapies, also known as conversion practices, are efforts to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. These practices are not just harmful, they do the opposite of what they claim.

...Lesbian, gay and bisexual people who have undergone conversion therapy are nearly 2x as likely to attempt suicide. Transgender and nonbinary youth who have been subject to it are >2x as likely to attempt suicide (NBC News, 9/11/19). Media implies it's just free speech. fair.org/home/nyt-sid...

The Supreme Court is poised to overturn Colorado’s conversion therapy ban. Representing the plaintiff is the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal group known for testifying in favor of or voicing support for a litany of anti-LBGTQ policies. Chris Geidner of Law Dork speaks on this.

In light of #SCOTUS hearing the ludicrous lawsuit that seeks to make #conversiontherapy legal for minors, I thought I’d share my new book a/b conversion therapy: SHAME-SEX ATTRACTION: SURVIVORS’ STORIES OF CONVERSION THERAPY.

Would you help me spread the word?

While we have more research about anti-LGB conversion therapy, we do have research on attempts to force trans people to accept their gender assigned at birth. They were more than twice as likely to attempt suicide. The same harm is evident: www.science.org/content/arti...

We've met survivors of conversion therapy.
We've listened to their stories.
We've seen what it did to their long-term health.
We've heard how destructive their experience was.

And we've seen and heard ENOUGH. #BeSeen🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

WATCH: Linda, who lost her son after he spent years in dangerous and discredited “conversion therapy,” speaks on why Colorado’s law helps protect families, kids, and faith.

Her story is a textbook example of why the Supreme Court must uphold Colorado’s restrictions on these harmful practices.

SCOTUS upheld TN’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Now they seemed poised to strike down CO’s ban on “conversion therapy” for minors. “I’m just, from a very broad perspective, concerned about making sure that we have equivalence with respect to these things.” -KBJ

It's not a sincere argument. They are cynically lying, while mocking anyone who wastes time trying to understand and legitimize their lies.

The far right has ALWAYS valued child abuse - and professional deceit against parents - as "freedom of speech" to which they alone are entitled.

Let's be clear on this: conversion therapy is not just talking to someone about your views. In documented case after case, it includes physical, mental, & sometimes chemical abuse by the practitioners onto their victims.

The First Amendment doesn't protect torture or abuse. Conversion therapy does.

So free speech trumps states rights to define medical standard of care? It sounded like some justices didn’t know the definition of “standard of care”.

Assuming they rule against the state, couldn’t the state change licensing (more education) to provide conversion therapy. Limit the damage.
conversiontherapy.bsky.social
They already do that. State law does not regulate private or personal speech, only professional conduct -- and only upon youths, not adults.

First take out of arguments: Despite efforts by Sotomayor to put off a decision, it appeared the Supreme Court will subject Colorado’s conversion therapy ban to strict scrutiny under the First Amendment, with a majority likely to strike it down outright.

When you'd rather have a dead kid than a queer one, allowing conversion therapy practices makes total sense. They don't want to deal with a living queer kid; they want to mourn the imaginary one they don't have.

This is a disgusting argument that free speech is being violated when children's safety are highly at risk through conversion therapy. This is going to lead to increased cases of child abuse, and sadly, child su*c*des.

SCOTUS is taking on another case that deals with LGBTQ+ rights. Some say it protects the free speech of counselors, while others argue it opens the floodgates for once-banned conversion therapy. Molly Martinez reports:
