A huge night for Democrats:

—They flip Miami's mayorship.
—They flip a state House district in Georgia that had voted Trump by 13%.
—They keep Albuquerque's mayorship, while the liberal faction flips city council.
—And they get big overperformances (+18 & +22) in 2 Florida specials.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

I was already following Bolts, so I took this as a nudge to finally subscribe, since I rely on their reporting.
I'm not exaggerating when I say following @boltsmag.org rn will unlock money for our journalism.

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

Never believe the fuckers who say "why bother, they already won"
NEWS: The Institute of Museum & Library Services has restored ALL previously canceled federal grants to libraries, following a ruling by a federal judge in Rhode Island last month.

This is a massive win for libraries & communities in every state & territory!

A personal favorite from the (first) print era, still on my dad’s fridge, still evergreen:

“Study finds 30% of people not actually entitled to their own opinion.”
What is the quintessential Onion headline? The strong contender that just randomly popped in my mind is "Hank Williams Jr. Honored by Institute For Football Preparedness"

This whole thread illustrates the absurdity of the current book banning craze, but this in particular really chaps my ass, as they say (sorry, couldn’t help it). These people are anti-knowledge, and they want everyone’s kids to be similarly ignorant/misinformed, especially about sex.
If your government believes that a person’s (let alone a unicorn’s) bootie is an organ of reproduction, then maybe it’s time to reexamine what passes for sexual education. 3/

It is genuinely incredible to me how much evidence there is to support investing in the public good and how much animus there is to do this simple, effective thing.

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

My first career was in the arts, and I was pretty good (consistently got work), but I had to pivot to something that offered real financial independence (and healthcare). So now I’m a librarian. Use your library, don’t steal from artists man, that’s not leftist, that’s entitled bullshit.
Publishers and corporations can be exploitative, absolutely; IP law is objectionable on several fundamental grounds, fully agree; a system of universal basic income would be better for artists, I'm on board - but until those changes are in place we're talking about stealing

This.

Whenever local government reviews the library budget and asks, "Why should we give you money?"

We want the library to be able to say, "Because we provide a valuable service used by many people!"

Libraries are like muscles, using them more makes them stronger. 💪
Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

It’s crazy to think about the crimes we’re going to learn about after this regime ends.

We’re already hearing about Watergate level crimes every week. Imagine what will come out after it’s over.

We’re going to need a full accounting of all that’s been done in violation of the constitution.

The Handbasket gets my subscription dollars because I find it satisfying and encouraging to read journalists who maintain a clear ethical standard with and through their work, as Marisa does. Pretty stark (gross) examples this week of what it looks like when journalists operate without it!
My mind has been spinning the last few days as multiple crises of journalism converged—the Nuzzi book, Epstein’s emails revealing journalists hid information, Trump berating a reporter with no consequence—and it occurred to me they all stemmed from the same source: elite impunity.
Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Esptein's journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.

The whole thread, but especially this part. It’s racism, and has been the entire time.
Almost everyone with a high level of racial resentment tended to vote for Trump in the 2024 election, regardless of educational attainment. Conversely, those with a low racial resentment score tended to support Harris, whether they had a college degree or not.
