The author community really needs to talk about how we are all so worried about art commissions, special editions, and audiobooks to the point that some writers are forgetting about the meat and potatoes of their business: writing damn good books.

Hi, if you are an author, and you have a virtual assistant? You should be paying them fairly. I don't give a fuck if your assistant is your best friend or your cousin. You should be paying them and paying them fairly.

And if you can't pay them fairly? Then don't have an assistant.

(1) Last study I saw showed USA reading rates *increasing* in kid & retired groups, declining only in working age adults

(2) France also has smart phones, video games, COVID etc.

(3) Agreed audiobooks are great for commutes, but labor causes the commutes

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

I will also say this does address the rising epidemic of illiteracy and reading comprehension in this country. The big five publishers in particular could do more about this, but they won't because they are short sighted and they simply don't care.

I've got my project for #FirstDraftFall 50-75% outlined and prepped
a lot of my energy this coming week will be towards prepping my home and space for me to focus

Most of the time, kids want to stay connected with their parents, and have little choice other than to go no contact.

If your kid isn't speaking to you, it's 95% likely that it's your fault.
