That social barrier is different for different people. I've certainly encountered some people who really enjoy telling other people off and do it readily.

The same roundtable where is was declared Antifa 'has been going on for almost 100 years … going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany'?

Because that girlfriend must be getting on a bit.

It's not quite how holding leaders to account is supposed to work...

Do you think that Comey rigged the election in Trump's favour in 2016, swinging an electorate who wouldn't have voted Trump to Trump; and if so, why do you think that in 2024 the vote for Trump was stronger despite Comey now being considered an enemy?
danielbundred.bsky.social
His creation of doubt might have been a factor in Trump's 2016 election; but given that Trump increased vote share in every demographic despite him then being a convicted criminal, I don't think you can say that the whiff of criminal wrongdoing is a barrier for American voters.

I think you might be overly optimistic about the practical independence of the judiciary in the US right now. Or indeed the separation of power

Trump doesn't care whether his actions are legal or not, and it turns out that if the executive and legislature are in lock-step the judiciary are useless.

In Ben's account he didn't have a hissy fit at all, he removed his child from the exhibit and then considered afterwards whether he was right to.

The collective duty I'd say there was to let his child play and consider how she was engaging with the installation in a way that we wouldn't.

Our culture does not solely exist for our enjoyment as adults, it's a legacy that we should bring the next generation up in. Art is often something they should explore and play in and relate to on their own terms with our guidance. Culture isn't just for us, but also for those who come after.
danielbundred.bsky.social
It's not at all unreasonable to argue that there should be showings limited to adults or gallery members or art card holders or whatever in which adults can engage in the art in the way you wish to. It is unreasonable to say that there can't be a time when B engaged with the art as she wishes to.
danielbundred.bsky.social
And that sometimes means that we need to exercise patience and understanding, knowing that our preferred way to appreciate the art may be paused or diminished by the way in which a child is appreciating the art.

In this thread Ben provides a reminder that when we're engaging with a public installation our form of engagement is not the only form of engagement, and the piece is not solely there for us to engage in. While there are obvious exceptions, by and large art for everyone means including everyone.

1. A thread about the very serious young woman who told me off for allowing my learning disabled eight year old daughter to dance in front of the big screens at a modern art installation.

Where I readily accept the sounds of the odd bit of music and some drunks coming back from the pub.

Awful, truly awful. Before you mentioned it, I'd forgotten that for most of the summer months when there are very few polytunnels to be seen the entire English countryside smells of feces...

I manage my distaste for the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside by living in London.

As a teacher, presumably one without children as I am, I'm sure you appreciate that that choice comes with a medium term benefit to us in terms of employment, as well as a long term benefit in terms of sustaining our society.
danielbundred.bsky.social
Endless fights from those new to the countryside about polytunnels too. You moved into a rural area and for months of the year the infrastructure of agriculture spoils your view.

But would it be right to prevent children from exposure to and engagement with art?

At the heart of the child free spaces discourse often seems to me the prioritisation of the comfort of those who already are adults over our collective duty to bring up those yet to become adults.

To be at capacity US ICE will have 30,000 employees and at present it has 60,000 people in detention. Adjusted crudely for population size Badenoch will need 6000 employees for her plan; managing a workforce of that size might entail employing a handful more civil servants.
danielbundred.bsky.social
ICE in the US has 21,000 employees at present with a goal to grow to 30,000; it is currently detaining 60,000 people; its budget is $10bn.

I don't really think that the UK ICE proposal is compatible with cutting overall public spending.

Insane for other reasons, but also very very expensive.

As the inheritors of this city they need to make moral decisions, and they cannot do so without an appreciation of moral nuance and the capacity for ethical uncertainty. We ask them often to make ethical judgements in texts where there are no clear answers.

Our students are fortunate to live in a great city, a city with an extraordinary history and which provides incredible opportunities; they should be proud of that and they should be equipped to utilise their advantages as Londoners. With that entitlement comes the responsibility to lead this city.
danielbundred.bsky.social
In our English curriculum, other than the bedrock of teaching only Literature which is important and we believe will endure, we have two requirements for the texts we choose and the questions we ask. We must empower our students as Londoners, and require them to engage with ethical complexity.

By their own accounting 50% of those ICE have arrested in Chicago raids are 'collateral arrests;' random people who ICE have arrested with no idea whether they are or aren't in the US illegally.

It would be mad to want to unleash this on our streets. It's chaotic.

ICE arrests nearly 550 in Chicago area as part of 'Midway Blitz'
Immigration enforcement officials have arrested almost 550 people in the Chicago area as part of an operation that began less than two weeks ago.

I can see how it's legal, I can't see how it's sane. I can't see why schools would pay anyone to speak. The largest international education conference org doesn't pay speakers; the most knowledgeable voices in education are usually happy to speak in exchange for a cup of tea and few biscuits.
