This is Canada. This is the foundation of the homestead my Great Great Grandfather built in Ontario for my family in the 1850s. I don’t think Americans understand the lengths Canadians will go to to remain our own independent sovereign nation. We will make the Mossad blush. #glovesoff

One of the many things I hate about all of this is that they’re making me hand it to the Catholic Church. So many institutions have disappointed me, and yet this one is surprising me with courage and moral conviction.

Right but cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling that motivates people to reconcile their contradictions. It will chip away at his base.

I think you’re underestimating how much of his base was initially radicalized by moral panic about pedophiles.

And the actor isn’t being cruel by acting out the motions of cruelty. This is an important distinction. Is a gamer homicidal because they play an FPS? Of course not.

I can understand the argument that saying words about AI that would be mean if directed toward a sentient being primes one for cruelty toward sentient beings (although I disagree for the same reason I don’t think video games cause violence). But it is not cruelty, because AI is inanimate.

No, because neither a rug or an AI can experience suffering.

Sometimes, when I talk to people, I feel like a boxing couch watching his fighter stand puzzled as he takes haymaker after haymaker. On the buzzer, I advise them to defend themselves, but they stubbornly insist that protecting themselves would be a provocation. The judges, they think, will admire it

Jet fuel can’t melt zombie terrorist brains. Let that sink in.

Seeing him defeat the legal system is a crucial factor in all this, yes. It made various actors less concerned about punishment for lawbreaking, and less confident that the law can protect them.

I certainly think we wouldn’t see this level of corporate and institutional capitulation if it weren’t for the relative impunity Trump and collaborators enjoyed during the inter-Trump years.

Pointless generalizations aside, I don’t think you know what gen-x is.

Living in a fairly conservative province, I love when TSwift comes up IRL and people ask for my thoughts. I always answer “you know, it’s not my style of music, but I really appreciate what she and her fiancé do for society.”
They tend to dislike that answer in the most satisfying way.

You’re right, but I would go further in that disdain toward a broad out-group is a major component of the psychology of the US fascist impulse.

That’s such a weird sentence. Like he doesn’t understand if-then construction. Or maybe he thinks protecting others is contingent on seeing pleading eyes. I’m not a MAGgot whisperer.

It’s nearly verbatim a slogan used by the Canadian Libertarian party in 2014.

That was much earlier, like mid-2000s. Sandy Hook may have played a role as well though. It happened December of 2012, and the widespread coverage may have caused a contagion effect.

Like the sites existed before that, but around 2013 is when *everybody* was on them. Then around 2016 is when they all switched from from chronological feeds to algorithmically generated feeds.

But the best game ever made was the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. I can still fly in the helicopters in that game popping T-72 turrets all day long and not get bored, nearly 25 years later.

The Forever Winter is a gorgeous PVE extraction shooter with a very interesting world where you are a scavenger looking for scraps amongst an apocalyptic forever war.
