One of the many things I hate about all of this is that they’re making me hand it to the Catholic Church. So many institutions have disappointed me, and yet this one is surprising me with courage and moral conviction.

And the actor isn’t being cruel by acting out the motions of cruelty. This is an important distinction. Is a gamer homicidal because they play an FPS? Of course not.

I can understand the argument that saying words about AI that would be mean if directed toward a sentient being primes one for cruelty toward sentient beings (although I disagree for the same reason I don’t think video games cause violence). But it is not cruelty, because AI is inanimate.

Seeing him defeat the legal system is a crucial factor in all this, yes. It made various actors less concerned about punishment for lawbreaking, and less confident that the law can protect them.

Living in a fairly conservative province, I love when TSwift comes up IRL and people ask for my thoughts. I always answer “you know, it’s not my style of music, but I really appreciate what she and her fiancé do for society.”
They tend to dislike that answer in the most satisfying way.

That was much earlier, like mid-2000s. Sandy Hook may have played a role as well though. It happened December of 2012, and the widespread coverage may have caused a contagion effect.

Like the sites existed before that, but around 2013 is when *everybody* was on them. Then around 2016 is when they all switched from from chronological feeds to algorithmically generated feeds.

But the best game ever made was the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. I can still fly in the helicopters in that game popping T-72 turrets all day long and not get bored, nearly 25 years later.
