Our brothers, sisters, siblings who are transgender are made in the image of God. They deserve love, acceptance, and affirmation. They deserve the chance to be able to share their skills, talents, and passions. And they deserve access to medical care according to their gender identity.

In Ps. 100:3 today: 'we are his people, the sheep he watches over with tender care' (FNV). We live within the care of the good shepherd. Within concern for the whole. Attention to the vulnerable. You can't love God & oppress the immigrant. Tender Care is our work today.

In Ps. 101:2 today: 'I want to study the way of integrity.' Not that we ever arrive, but we can be a student of integrity. Wholeness. Neighborliness. Suspect the algorithms & rage bait. Do not concede the rights of your neighbor. Live compassionately. Integrity is my work today.

Now more than ever, it is essential for us to be clear about what virtuous living entails, and about our own desire to pattern our lives accordingly - even if we don't share every detail of our successes and failings as we pursue that

In Ps.102:17 today: 'God will turn to the prayer of the impoverished; he won't despise their prayers.' Advent is about turning toward hope. There is no hope in violence. No hope in oligarchy. No hope in racism. Hope is at hand revealing Love's design. Prayer is my work today.

In Ps. 112:5 today: 'It is well with those who deal generously.' Generosity & well-being are sisters, offspring of justice & mercy. In a moment of rage bait algorithms, & fear of immigrants, deal generously. Consider grace. Generously is my meditation today.

I saw this print in my friend Armand’s office in the early ‘90’s. When I commented how much I liked it, he took it off the wall and handed it to me. Ever since then it’s the first thing I read when I get up each morning and I say a prayer:

May it be so.

In Ps.115:9 today: 'God is their help and shield.' Ezer/help refers to God's powerful, active, daily assistance. All we need to be faithful is here. And we join God in God's work of shielding those robbed of due process. Robbed of healthcare. Work. Shield is my work today.

We refuse anything less as the destination. The future is one where every church is practicing and preaching the truth, the life, the freedom, and the blessing that is only reflected with full queer welcome, inclusion, affirmation, belonging, and leadership at every level.

Have the courage to say so. Have the willingness to exclude the intolerant beliefs and opinions while honoring the need to listen, learn, grow, influence, and teach. It's not about excluding individuals; it's about setting our doctrinal truth, our policies, our reason for being.

If Jesus said his disciples would be known by their love for others, then when we claim to follow him but we are known for our bullying, our mockery, our callousness, and our contempt for others, we are actively taking his name in vain.

Love must be our reputation.

As a Church leader for the past 20 years, this talk is cruel, wrong, and antidemocratic. Religious nonprofits are not a substitute for what we agree to do collectively in a democracy via taxes. We don’t have the capacity or infrastructure. We actually don’t want religions acting as FEMA. We can’t.
“Just go to a food bank, a church or a charity”

For every meal the food bank provides, the SNAP program provides 9.

Even if donations are rapidly scaled up, they won’t be able to meet the needs of 42 million Americans who are about to go hungry.

It’s not sustainable.
