Well-rounded, fair, with a photographic memory. Interested in physics, materials science. From NYC, now in Central Europe
Love this quote at the end:

"No acceptable explanation for the miraculous identity of particles of the same type has ever been put forward. That identity must be regarded, not as a triviality, but as a central mystery of physics."
- Physicists Charles W. Misner, John A. Wheeler, and Kip S. Thorne
I just love this research post. I keep reading it. Non-locality inherent in all similar particles across the universe. I used to geek out with a Caltech friend when I was working on a scifi proj about entanglement and ask 'what if we really are all connected?'...

Quantum nonlocality may be inherent in the very nature of identical particles
At its deepest physical foundations, the world appears to be nonlocal: particles separated in space behave not as independent quantum systems, but as parts of a single one. Polish physicists have now ...

Mentions and reminds here that Louise Webster, an Australian scientist, was the co-discoverer of black holes and she shouldn’t have been forgotten about
Great to chat with someone who really loved my book on black holes, A Crack in Everything, and appreciated the fact I had gone and talked to the people who had made the discoveries and told their stories. Here’s the podcast newbooksnetwork.com/a-crack-in-e...

I uploaded the classic Watson & Crick paper about DNA structure, and the Adviser had this to say about one of the greatest paper endings of the century:

This from a top expert on Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier.
Highly likely that we're committing to an additional 3 meters (10 ft) of sea level rise as we speak. Yes, it'll take time to fully materialize, but when will the enormous damage that we're signing up for sink in with voters and policy makers?
In summary, the outlook is grim. It is highly likely that Thwaites Glacier will eventually be lost, which will destabilise adjoining parts of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, increasing the committed long-term rise in global mean sea level by more than 3 m.

Tepid demand due to "subpar economic conditions, increasing vehicle efficiencies, & robust electric vehicle sales in many markets." 😮

#India recorded its LARGEST ever increase in both #solar and #wind in the first half of 2025 ☀️🌪️🇮🇳

Solar rose 17 TWh (+25%) and wind 11 TWh (+29%) 📈

Solar growth alone was bigger than demand growth, while wind matched it.

How does one write about China's plans - solar or whatever else - in Tibet without recognising that the people have been marginalised and pushed out? The lack of understanding of land and resource rights issues among (mostly Western) climate reporters is sadly not new

Over 20 yrs of flying insect counts at a remote high(3000m)-mountain meadow in Colorado (by a very dedicated observer) shows insect counts fell by an average of 6.6%/yr, overall a 72.4% drop. The main culprit was rising summer temperatures, especially warmer nights. ½

Colorado mountains study shows insect numbers dropped 72% in 20 years, driven mainly by warming summer nights.

RIVM: bijna iedereen in Nederland heeft te veel PFAS in bloed
De effecten zijn afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid PFAS, de duur van de blootstelling en iemands persoonlijke gezondheidssituatie, zegt het instituut.

Germany has ended up in a situation where they're building new fossil fuel power stations (yes, gas is a fossil fuel, folks)

Slapping "hydrogen" and "CCS" onto the PDFs procuring 20 freaking gigawatts of new fossil fuel plants doesn't make it any less bad

I thought it was :: and had been referencing " we eat 1 credit card/5 grams of plastic per year", not per week. If you take the lower bound of the average quoted by @hankgreen.bsky.social here (0.1g to 5g) per week that's roughly 5 grams per year.

Unintentional (or was it?) SciComm win on my part.
We do not eat a credit card’s worth of plastic a week. This doesn’t pass even the most basic sniff test but also the paper everyone is quoting doesn’t even say that we ingest that much plastic and I’m sick of hearing it in credible places!!!

For many of us, it doesn’t cost much to improve someone’s life, and we can do much more of it
Most countries spend less than 1% of their national income on foreign aid; even small increases could make a big difference.
