One could blame this on elites and billionaires, but that badly leaves the rest of us off the hook.

We get this kind of media coverage, and this kind of corrupt governance, because deep down, we want it.

Without the circus, life feels meaningless and void. Not even fucking kidding. 😕

Same reason why they treated Hillary’s email server as the biggest scandal of 2016 and Kamala’s primaryless nomination as the biggest of 2024.

That, and the normalization of Trump’s corruption and demented psychopathy, fits into the coverage of politics-as-circus. Which media literally depends on.

It’s simple: Treating him as if he were normal results in higher ratings and less bored audiences.

People want a circus. That circus is what keeps legacy media financially alive.

It’s also why they leaned hard into narratives that condemned Biden for existing and gave MAGA culture-war BS credence.

The first time I got that feeling was watching Tulsi Gabbard do an interview for her presidential campaign in 2020.

She was obviously trying to shit on her own party and make it easier for Trump to win, without doing so out loud. Never saw anyone so self-consciously full of shit in my life.

The unfortunate reason why they platform guys like this is simple:

It gets clicks and sells ads.

More broadly:

During Biden’s administration, they did not get as many clicks, nor sell as many ads.

Trump had his finger on something when he said that secretly, the media wanted him to win.

That said, Leo's elevation is a double-edged sword.

The Church long resisted putting Americans in positions of leadership, because doing so would put them in charge of secular AND religious global institutions.

The fact that they're dropping that resistance now speaks volumes about the former.😕

The weird thing is, the article seems to frame it as some kind of a surprise.

The new Pope was well-known as the intellectual firepower behind Francis, long before he became Pope. Many "conservatives" knew this years ago.

If any of them hoped Leo would be a retrenchment they apparently can't read.

Ironically I think it will be easier now, in this dark era, to forthrightly make the case for trans rights.

Media companies no longer have a problem with “ratings”, and voters are certainly no longer bored.

Plus we’re now touching the hot stove of bigotry in power, and learning that lesson. 😕

But yeah, we’re both in agreement that Yglesias/Shor/Silver/Chait’s recommended solution of adopting right-wing policies on this in word and deed is stupid and a mistake.

Liberals didn’t adopt it during past kulturkampf panics, and they’re not going to now.
