There's something I'm seeing, where companies are now trying to find ways of saying they're not using AI while using AI. AI is becoming a really poisonous term, and I've seen even in casual conversation people trying to avoid it, and saying things like "current technologies" or whatever.

As we scale up renewables, one thing becomes crystal clear: without storage, the energy transition will stall.

Batteries aren’t just for cars. They’re also crucial for grids, industry, and heating.

Great short from DW.

capitalism is like, a really really huge pyramid scheme.

When enough people aren't seeing any kind of benefit of capitalism, everything stalls. The whole point is to circulate money, so when it doesn't- bc poor people have none and rich people hoard/accumulate it all- everything just sort of stops
Been trying to explain why economy increasingly feels like it's running wholly on rich people passing each other same bag of money - innovation is stalled, unemployment is rising, but stock tickers are still somehow going up. This example captures the current state of our economy perfectly.

Those willing, by contrast, to trade away the rights and dignity of transgender people or the poor cannot be considered friends of democracy any more than those who were willing to countenance second-class status for blacks and Jews.
Anyway, it is true that democracy will be on the ballot in 2028. But it'll be on the ballot for Democrats well before the general. And the party's task is creating democracy, not defending it. That demands both an attentiveness to structural politics and a willingness to defend the equality of all.

Did you know it's legal to say "an Elbit arms manufacturing plant in Bristol has closed its doors after months of targeting from Palestine Action". But it'd ILLEGAL to follow that with "what incredible work from those heroes". That'd be an offence under the Terrorism Act of 2000. Don't say that!

This is more than any year on record, by far.

Okay at this point you have to ask yourself “If I was actively collaborating with Trump to make sure he stayed in power while pretending to be in opposition, what would I do differently”
A Democratic messaging firm ("Navigator Research") tied to the establishment has sent out a memo on govt shutdown fight around DC this am.

They want the Democrats/progressives to focus on "bipartisanship" and focus no pissing of Republicans by talking about "stopping Trump." 🙃

one unfortunate outcome of this recent AI scam bubble is that it has absolutely killed my interest in AI's in fiction. the Alien tv show doing the whole "is AI a human" routine we've been doing for the last hundred years but now I'm like no, it's a shitty chatbot that destroys fresh water

Unfortunately, this isn't limited to elites. Every Baby Boomer whom I know personally is opposed to everything that's happening right now, but not so opposed that they would do something unthinkable like be rude to their Republican nephews or friends or landscapers.
I will never understand how American elites managed to convince themselves that uncivil debate — not fascism, not impunity and not widespread indifference to facts — is the defining problem of our time.
