Unfortunately, I can confirm that this is true.

I have known Carl for 2 decades and he is smart, dedicated, and quite apolitical, focused on science and getting stuff done on important problems.

Huge unnecessary loss of leadership and expertise.
Hearing news that Carl Dieffenbach, the Director of the Division of AIDS at #NIH (NIAID), has been removed from his position because he was "not aligned with HHS/OMB."

Russell Vought continues to remove great scientists as part of the Project 2025 mission to politicize and destroy NIH.

Wait a minute...you mean to tell me thousands of the most beautiful women on earth didn't all randomly decide to join Twitter in 2023?????
X rolled out a new feature overnight showing where accounts are based. This network of “Trump-supporting independent women” that claimed to be “real Americans” are based in Thailand.

The photos were stolen from European models & posts pushed pro-Trump lines while targeting Islam and LGBTQ people.

Yes: AI does not introduce anything fundamentally new. IFs/blots could me made up well before ( remember E. Racker!) and the bottom line is trust- within labs and among peers
I could use an antibody for a protein that I know is at the minus end and say i stained for my new protein.

I could fail to add antibody to my sample to show you that the siRNA worked…

Ultimately, we either trust one another or it’s all over.

This may be the death of me.
I posted yesterday about the shift to triaging 70% of NIH applications rather than 50%.

This is apparently just a temporary step to catch up for all of the study section meetings cancelled due to the government shutdown.

I hope NIH will collect some data to track the impacts of this change.

I am seeing a lot of posts about Rosalind Franklin that themselves ignore her publication record on DNA!

In fact Franklin and Gosling's paper, including the famous Photograph #51, was published, along with Wilkins's paper, back-to-back with the Watson and Crick paper in Nature in 1953.

Sliwa can show different facets but my favorite is his clown show on NY1 with Borrero- esp. when they were joking about “King Cuomo the 2nd”
Continually surprised by how classy Sliwa manages to look, admittedly by comparison to lowlifes
Zohran Mamdani says on NY1 he didn't get a congratulatory call from either Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams last night.

He says he got a congratulatory call from Curtis Sliwa, though.

Not a word from the ADL’s Jonathan Greenblatt on Tucker hosting Fuentes. Amazing.

I just checked his Twitter feed and plenty on Mamdani and even Norway (!) but not a word about a top conservative podcaster hosting an infamous Holocaust denier.

Greenblatt is beyond parody at this point.

We also know that his use of the term “very suggestive” still overstates the what the data show, but that it is also more than enough for at least 1/3 of Americans to continue to believe this lie.

By a fun coincidence, the estimated total number of observable stars in the Universe is about a mole (1E23)

But 1 mole of water molecules is about 1 tablespoon, 18 mL.

So, there are more molecules in a tablespoon of water than all the (observable) stars in the Universe!

Happy Mole Day 2025!
Happy Mole Day, 10/23.

Your science history fact for the day: Avogadro's constant was coined by physicist Jean Perrin (shown) who defined it as the number of molecules in 16 grams of oxygen & proposed it be named after Amedeo Avogadro, who had died 4 years previously.

In the audience tonight is Charlotte Bennett, one of the 13 women that Andrew Cuomo is credibly alleged to have sexually harassed while they worked in his government.

She can't speak for herself because Cuomo's lawyers have hounded her.

So I confronted him.
