My father died two weeks ago today and it simultaneously feels like it happened yesterday and a million years ago. At some point, I need to write about it, but right now, I just want to say that I miss him.

Both of these seem like good things.

If you're in Toronto, the flamenco group I study with is performing in a multi-group show in November. My personal participation is limited (because reasons😞) but the pieces are amazing and the other performers come from rich dance traditions. Ticket info below:

16 year old me is also freaking out. Just look at it!
I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

This crab is going to organize its community against digital surveillance and I am here for it.
I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

You know what wins real wars against peer opponents? Warehouses full of bombs and bullets and tourniquets, maintenance crew to service the vehicles that move them and "warriors" to where they need to go, and boring spreadsheets to tell you how much of everything you have. Logistics! Logistics!
Hegseth: "Maximum lethality -- not tepid legality. Violent effect, not politically correct. We're gonna raise up warriors. Not just defenders."

This thread is gold.
I think the reason rock is dying as a genre is that the singers are always too bossy.

They're always telling you to Dance the Night Away or Do the Loco-motion or Pour Some Sugar on Them.

SO BOSSY.

Beauty and the Beast X fin-de-siècle art X female vampire. Is that how the kids do the book promo thing these days? Anyway, my book A TERRIBLE BEAUTY is on sale for $1.99 today. Just in case that description sounds intriguing.

I think we should institute this in Toronto.
When you register your name in the Icelandic phonebook you can choose to state your profession. And they have a pretty loose definition of what exactly a profession entails.

This person for example has opted for „þjóðhetja“. It means „National Hero“.

My extremely talented friend David Keyes just posted this gorgeous video of one of his poems. His new collection of stories and poems is beautiful.

Reading Ishiguro’s THE UNCONSOLED and after two chapters I’m starting to wonder whether this is a horror novel. Because it certainly could be (though it probably isn’t).

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

A man stirs the pot. “It’s a metaphor,” he says.

The frog is sweating.

The frog is informed that this is due to a natural variation in temperature.

“He’s clearly boiling the frog,” say the other frogs.

All books about frogs have vanished from the library.
Signs the Frog Has Been Boiled
