Hi, I'm Faye! I'm a Japanese-English translator, mostly focused on entertainment media. Hobbies include being a language nerd, poking computers, music, and being gay. It's been a year and a half since I quit my tech job to go into translation, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made 💞

We don’t use AI for subtitles. Every line is carefully timed and translated by real people (who cry during finales and debate Best Girls, just like you).

@hidive.com is on Bluesky, but here's a screencap from their Twitter account where they state what should feel obvious when it comes to the idea of using AI for anime translation & timing... but in today's world it's unfortunately not so obvious.

Good on Hidive, regardless.

Such a perfect illustration of what @katrinal10n.bsky.social is always saying about 許さない! Seeing how things get translated E->J is super instructive for a J->E translator, especially the tricky little phrases 🗒️

"but it's everywhere now so we just have to accept it's the new reality" motherfucker we can just stop putting it everywhere! we did it with asbestos and CFCs and lead-based paint or petrol and make-up with arsenic in it! if everyone is using something and it's bad, we can choose to stop!

Messing around with a translation of Cocco’s I stumble upon one of @katrinal10n.bsky.social’s favorite words: 許さない!

I went with this choice because this isn’t about forgiveness, but about letting someone go. Our singer has realized that her relationship and her lover’s goals are incompatible.
atranslated lyrics from Cocco’s Jukai no aito

if i believed,
i wouldn’t know fear
I realized I knew how to walk alone

Fumbling with my long limbs,
I was lost within the woods

deep within the ocean of trees
my prayers were swallowed by the darkness

if you can hear my voice,
sobbing and shouting, then close your eyes

Don’t let a single thing make you waver

If it weren’t for you,
i could protect this dream

I’ll weave together that overwhelming hatred
and sing a song of love for you

In honour of International Translation Day, please enjoy these shelves of my translation children!
Two columns of four blond wood bookshelves. The left column is full of English books two or three sets deep in each shelf, and the right column has the Japanese source books, three sets deep in each shelf. I have translated a lot of books bc I have no work-life balance.

Started a new Hades 2 save file; I've been switching the language to Japanese now and then out of curiosity, and the localization team absolutely knocked it out of the park! Lots of smart, hard-hitting reformulations, and clever handling of tricky wordplay—it's really inspiring stuff 😍
Chronos, Titan of Time: *However long it takes*? You speak of inevitability, little one. A subject on which I happen to be the expert. As to whomever sent you after me... I shall find them. Polyphemus: "You know who's disrespected me like this? Nobody. Nobody took my sheep. Took my eye."

Melinoe: "Yes, well, sometimes we've no one to blame but ourselves."

Polyphemus: "Nobody's gonna pay for all that someday. But you're gonna pay right now. *Heh.* Metaphorically, I mean! I'm not gonna take your money. Just gonna eat ya... bones and all."

just TL'd a chain of four おつかれs in a row between four people as
-Hello, all.
-Hi there.
-Greetings, sir.
-How goes it?

feels like a glimpse of the pre-Babel world's universality, of purer notions, unspoilt by semantic signification; a droplet of which demands such a journey!

Before the events of Sep 10th, KOSA was reported to be dead in the committee. Now they're using said events as an excuse to try to get the bill through.

Just because the debate guy got killed for his free speech doesn't mean they should take away yours.

Think its stupid that VISA and Mastercard think something as innocent as Cat Ear accessories are a bannable offense?

Then heres something you can do about it. Complain to visa and MC, call your representatives.

Advocate for porn, whole heartedly.

My SubscribeStar page has been soft banned, if that's the term. It's still there in a sense, but people can no longer support me, payments are no longer being accepted, and I cannot post the update there. I haven't been informed why. I've contacted support, but have yet to receive a response. I've set up alternatives on Fanbox and Boosty, which you can find here:

Due to the timing, I suspect this is connected with the recent troubles regarding internet privacy and freedom, in the UK in particular, with the governments restricting access to adult content. It's part of an international trend to control the sort of content people can access, and create. I've heard a lot about activist groups spearheading this, about Mastercard and Visa pressuring governments. This is pertinent, but kinda skips over why they have such power to begin with.

At its heart, DoL has always been about the struggles of a vulnerable person in a society that doesn't care what happens to them. This was inspired by the worsening state of the UK I witnessed growing up. I mention this because I believe these problems, as well as the loss of privacy and freedom, are connected. They're symptoms of the same thing.

Ordinary people are losing control of the resources they need to live. Those who own a lot of assets, including homes and basic infrastructure, are able to charge others for their use. They spend this money on more assets, which makes yet more money, and so on. Money is a competitive resource, so this drives up the price of assets beyond the reach of more and more people.

In the past, richer countries prevented this through progressive taxation. Since changes to tax structures in the 80s, there have been dramatic changes in wealth distribution. That's what I witnessed growing up, though I had no way of knowing at the time. A rich country transforming into a poor country.

All the wealth in the UK, the USA, and other countries, is being i…

Even just the subtitles themselves are formatted so much better in streaming versions. These subs from BTR are way easier to parse on streaming: Bocchi's inner monologue is in italics, and the dialogue is in blue and separated, to make who's saying what much clearer.
BTR BD, overlapping dialogue is stacked on top of each other with double dashes separating each line Streaming version: the inner monologue is in italics, and the overlapping dialogue is at the top of the screen same same

Oh, interesting – what sorts of limitations does it have? Is it more complicated than just raster images with transparency that get overlaid on the video?

(Thank you as always for all your insights into the technical details! It's fascinating—and frustrating—learning more about this stuff)

I'm assuming the specific software they're using to produce the blu-ray releases doesn't support the full extent of text styling that the web client does; but people took the time to translate and format *all* of that text, and it's an unsatisfying reason to throw out 95% of their work :/

Dress-Up Darling episode 3

Left: Crunchyroll web streaming
Right: Blu-ray

The blu-rays are using PGS (image-based) subtitles, so it's not an issue of cross-device compatibility; the format can support text styled and positioned however, and it'll display the same in every player.
Frame from Dress-Up Darling streaming on Crunchyroll: A sheet of paper covered in diagrams and handwritten notes for designing the Shizuku-tan cosplay. Every bit of Japanese on-screen text is overlaid with a full English translation positioned right on top of the Japanese. Frame from Dress-Up Darling on blu-ray: The same sheet of paper as the web screenshot. The subtitles have two short snippets excerpted from the on-screen text, positioned at the top of the screen; all the other text is left untranslated. Frame from Dress-Up Darling streaming on Crunchyroll: Panning to a different part of the sheet of paper. Again, every bit of Japanese on-screen text is overlaid with a full English translation; the text that was in the previous shot has been repositioned to match the pan, and newly visible text has properly positioned translations as well. Frame from Dress-Up Darling on blu-ray: Panning to a different part of the sheet of paper. Again, the subtitles just have two random excerpts from the on-screen text positioned at the top of the screen; they're different snippets from the ones in the previous frame.

A good reminder that less can be (a lot) more and that good word-smithing should not sacrifice readability.

Or "just because you can doesn't mean you should."
katrinal10n.bsky.social
This example alone made me gasp aloud. There's creative localization, and then there's... whatever this is.

I'd start blathering on and on about functionalism and player expectations for game text but I don't even think you need theory to recognize this is just bad localization.
