"It is against the TOS to be talked into suicide by our LLM" is possibly the most evil tech bro thing I've ever read
Additionally, OpenAI argues its not liable because Raine, by using ChatGPT for self-harm, broke its terms of service

Amazing
Sooo many folks I’m excited to work with on Mamdani’s technology transition committee. All hands on deck to bring the Affordability Agenda to life: childcare, housing, transportation.

While its easy to get swept up in personality, this is a group focused on peoples real needs. LETS KEEP THE FOCUS.

Ridley Scott's Blood Meridian
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Pecan is absolutely one of the best but calling apple pie bad is ridiculous. A warmed up piece of apple pie with some vanilla ice cream is euphoric
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

Maybe it's because I am tall, but why are there no book or tablet desktop stands that rise to eye-level? Why do all these reading stands still expect you to lean over the book and look down

the fact that if you phrase search in a PDF and if it has a line break it won't find it is one of those mostly insignificant concerns you can't understand why it has not been remedied so drives you completely insane

There was a kind of a delight in being in tech after the 2000–1 crash, because it was back to us true believers. LLM-based AI has been coupled with the AI bubble. Once that bubble pops, I think we'll see the advancement of on-device, ethically-sourced LLMs, and I think they'll be fun.

It's strange to be in a field wishing for the bubble around you to pop, but I think this post captures some of the why. AI as technology has so much cool and fun potential, and it's going to be so exciting to see it freed from being developed and pushed by the awful people at the top of tech.

Original trilogy and The Last Jedi are all I care about. I like Rogue One but I can leave it
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Not gonna lie, I am going to Bergen, Norway to help conduct a seminar in a few weeks and I would be lying if I said my excitement was not partially due in part to visiting during the holiday season

What should I watch after I finish Escaflowne? I just finished Revolutionary Girl Utena. Not to say I am on a 90s tare but I am open to more from the decade.

Tend to not like overly zany or goofy stuff. Much more into the overly dour and self-serious, though I don't mind *some* comic relief.

one thing thats crazy about the current era in the states is that it is clear across most domains that science got processed by a lot of people as "traumatic encounter with the real" and now they are just making decisions based on that trauma.

elon, peter, anti-vaxxers, all the same problem
Over many interviews, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake America’s public-health system. Can he lead the scientific establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?

Love this thread
i'm going to sound sarcastic here but genuinely one of the most interesting aspects of LLMs is that they are proving that evil is real, by which i mean if you train them to do one bad thing they start doing other bad things that you have not trained them to do
At least once a month, Anthropic puts out an alignment paper d AI behavior where, if you saw it in a science fiction film, you‘d be screaming at the idiot scientists onscreen to stop development

I'm going to build a model that invents evil from first principles
the consensus seems to be that models are not inventing evil from first principles, but rather they are formed by correlating vast swaths of human text and recognize that certain concepts are correlated w/one another (that's how LLMs work in the first place), so they see the evil ones as related

Libgen and Anna's archive are obviously more important than the library of Alexandria ever was
"I think you're being really histrionic about this and having reactions wildly inappropriate to the scope of the issue, unlike me, who is comparing your concerns about uncompensated use of your work to burning the Library of Alexandria"
