All of these measures
Including the Jordan Peterson law...are undermining our accountability to patients and our self regulation.

Patients will still experience harms and trust in our profession will be eroded.

These governments better support conscientious objectors to involuntary treatment.
Premier David Eby says changes to involuntary care protect workers from being sued
The provincial government has tabled changes to the Health Mental Act, which it says will reduce the legal exposure of health care workers, who deliver involuntary care to patients held under the law.

Our ethics is a higher bar to uphold. It doesn't protect us from the broken trust in our profession and our health system.
the government is amending the act to protect healthcare workers who provide involuntary treatment from liability BECAUSE ITS UNCONSTITUTIONAL
Today the BC NDP introduced Bill 31, the Mental Health Amendment Act, in response to an ongoing court case.

The BC Greens say the move is an opportunistic effort to protect its defence of involuntary treatment.

When people are forced to choose between paying rent, feeding their family, or seeing a doctor, our society has failed.

We need a system that guarantees universal access because life and health are not negotiable.

Anything less is injustice dressed up as policy.

“A government does not reach for the notwithstanding clause four times in a month unless something is deeply wrong. This isn’t normal. It isn’t safe. And it isn’t democracy. Each time rights are pushed aside, a warning siren is blaring: Power is being placed above people.”

A health crisis makes a person scared and vulnerable. It can be a very lonely journey. A public health system is a safety net for everyone. Regardless of your ability to pay we are here to care for and about you.

It exposes political interference, broken governance, and decisions that directly worsen access to care for all ABs.

An Examination of Community Laboratory Services (Contract with DynaLIFE) - Office of the Auditor General, Alberta
Examination Overview  In late 2019, Alberta Health Services (AHS) began the process to outsource community laboratory services for the provincial healthcare system. This led to a $4.8 billion contract signed with DynaLIFE Dx (DynaLIFE) in May 2022, with service delivery scheduled to begin in December 2022. Eight months later, in August 2023, AHS terminated the agreement at the request of DynaLIFE’s owners.  Given the significance … Continued

Our medical students already fully know that the proposed changes are neither fair nor equitable.
The Calgary Medical Students Association and the U of A Medical Students Association have written an open letter to the Smith government “imploring” them to reconsider 2 tiered healthcare in Alberta.

Don't think they'll use the notwithstanding clause to do it?

Govt knows and refuses to acknowledge (there’s no profit to be had for their friends treating those surgical conditions)
Are cancer surgery wait times still increasing in Alberta? They were earlier in the year.
