When I interviewed Spinal Tap and Marty DiBergi this summer, none of them broke character, for the whole hour. Except Rob Reiner, once, losing it when Michael McKean's David St Hubbins talked about minimalism. I didn't use this in the feature and hadn't published any audio, but this is joyful.

...why?
People keep saying that AI is inevitable. Like Bartleby, I'd prefer not to... We "have to use it!" My response to that is simply... WHY? Why is it being pushed so much and into so many things? Once you've gotten people to cede their decision making to an algorithm, eventually they'll stop thinking for themselves. Why would I outsource thinking for myself to a machine? I have a brain.

my “AI is over” anecdote is that my wife was hired over the summer to write scripts for a big tech company explaining how to use their AI tools and after many rounds of revisions, the latest notes said “we’re finding a lot of AI fatigue among our users” and to remove all references to AI

Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

His love of bikes has also produced the first wrinkle in our book-reading sessions. If a particular book has a bike in it (Boats on the Bay, Baby Go Japan, Everywhere Babies) he will let me get three or four pages in before grabbing the text from me and turning to the correct page, pointing triumphantly at the bike in question, and announcing “Bike” over and over, at which point he is no longer interested in having the rest of the book read to him and would like me to put it away. It has even lead to, I am sorry to say, dubious claims. Only last night I was reading Strega Nona to him and he began to leaf through the pages, chanting “Bike” to himself with perfect earnestness. BABY [Leafing]: Bike. Bike. Bike. SELF: Where is there a bike in Strega Nona? BABY [Still confident]: Bike. SELF: Where in this early modern Calabrian village did you see a bike? Show me the bike you’re thinking of. Where is the evidence? BABY [Producing zero evidence of a bike, while admitting to precisely nothing] Bike.
