Thank you to Pleiades for publishing my snarky little CDC hate poem 🖤

Encouraging News

As the CDC director announces with a smile that the overwhelming number of deaths occurred in people with at least four comorbidities
—people who were unwell to begin with I think of the film noir my students made where local townspeople kept being killed— how after every murder twelve-year-old Charlie in a too-big trench coat and fedora announced in his best old timey radio voice:
There's been a murder.
But don't worry—
it was only a SMALL murder.

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

ME/CFS is a devastating condition that has long been denied, dismissed, psychologised and underdiagnosed. Research is at last starting to catch up with it, with glimmers of hope for those who have been left untreated for so long.
There's a huge BUT coming ...🧵

Research could offer hope for ME patients – but some experts urge caution and say more studies needed

One of the more incredible stories out of LA this year has been how a taco review blog became the best on-the-ground coverage of ICE raids in the city.

They do a dispatch every day, follow-up on the kidnapped people (which almost no media outlet has done), and fact-check government claims.

This is correct. Every year from age 0-5 is really 3 years, ages 5-10 are 2 years, 10-20 is the only time when time works correctly, & after that each decade is a year, except for 2020-2025 which has simultaneously been a long 3 weeks & also a lifetime & also maybe just one bad night of nightmares

Honey, don't even tell me that 2005 was 20 years ago, that's just not possible. That would mean that 1995 was 30 years ago, and obviously that's absurd. Of course, 1985 was 40 years ago, that's just obvious.

It looks like they believe whatever makes them happiest in the moment.

1) If a bad thing is happening to others, it can't happen to me 😮‍💨

2) 💥Oh no! the bad thing happened to me! 💥

3) What a shame that bad thing was impossible to predict and also inevitable 🤷‍♀️

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Nobody has Long COVID, but everybody has brain fog, cognitive decline and memory loss. I talk about the overwhelming scientific evidence that COVID damages the brain, and the overwhelming social unwillingness to acknowledge it in my latest:

I can’t blame her but she could have just done a boudoir shoot like every other millennial & left Charli & Olivia & her fiancé’s ex out of it. I’m not a Taylor hater but I can see their point 😭

60% of *all* americans don't make enough to cover the basics.

marginalized americans are doing disproportionately worse than that.

please regard each other accordingly.

Y'all don't know anyone's financial situation on here. Just accusing people of "begging" because you don't like them. Black unemployment is up over 7%. "We need community" but also "don't need community TOO much." Help or hush. You in the way.

Telemedicine coverage formally came to an end yesterday, October. 1, 2025, with the Congress not being able to make this change permanent. It is caught in the budget fight. Please call your state and federal representatives. Tell them how you are affected. We need more voices to be heard.

Hard to think of a topic more tailor-made to the peculiarities of Bluesky's demographics than gifted kid discourse - seemingly everyone's a former gifted kid who's exactly 38 thus is likely to now have gifted kids of their own.

Far too many people in the US are already totally untethered from reality. Enter AI:
“Part of what keeps us sane is other people’s perspectives, which are often in tension with ours,” says Carissa Véliz, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI. “When you say something questionable, others will challenge you, ask questions, defy you. It can be annoying, but it keeps us tied to reality, and it is the basis of a healthy democratic citizenry. Truth is intersubjective, meaning that we need other people — their testimony, their experiences, their rationality — to be well informed. And chatbots are not people. They don’t have experience. They are not witness. They are fancy wordplay.”

I am told almost every day on this website that I’m absurd. But I firmly believe this: we can do better on Covid, and it’s not even that far away. But it starts with individuals choosing to take action. You. Me. All change starts there.
