Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

Not only does this story get a number of basic facts wrong, it doesn’t take time to actually explore why Portlanders elected these folks. Coming in with a pre-baked PDX story to fit a NYT narrative about NYC is harmful, especially at this moment.

Among the several PNW projects the Trump admin canceled funding for today:

$250M to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in Oregon to upgrade a transmission line, which would have enabled the Tribes to develop new renewable energy + reliability to PGE customers

It’s difficult to find the words to express how our unit is feeling right now, but we’ll take a stab at it: shocked, disappointed, angry, gutted. @cascadepbs.bsky.social’s choice to eliminate long-form written reporting is a massive loss for our community in a critical moment. tinyurl.com/LayoffFund

In case you missed the big transmission (and other climate) news out of CA!

Most exciting: public financing for the grid + lowering utility shareholder profits on wildfire prevention. 💰Energy affordability and 💡climate action rolled into one.

New poll from @heatmap.news. Look how low transmission lines rank. We've got a lot of work to do to make these projects more appealing.

New analysis re: how to keep expanding access to heat pumps, even amid tightening state budgets and declining $$ for rebates
sightline.org
Heat pumps could cut energy bills for most low-income Cascadian households by an average of $500/yr – if upfront costs weren’t so prohibitive.

@rpelai.bsky.social and @emilymoore.bsky.social suggest three levers (beyond rebates) to help families access a more efficient heating/cooling system ⬇️🧵

Three tools to help the region’s low-income families afford more efficient heating and cooling systems—even as public dollars dry up.

Climate change is upending the basic assumption that Americans can continue to build wealth and financial security by owning their own home.

In a sense, it is upending the American dream.

How Climate Change Could Upend the American Dream
Americans have long accumulated wealth by owning their homes, but a new study predicts that spiking insurance rates and climate disasters now herald an era of widespread losses.

✅ Safer crosswalks & sidewalks
✅ Traffic calming measures to improve safety

And thank you to everyone who advocated to make the new trail wider, and stay on the water-side (rather than double crossing)!

In May, Bonneville Power Administration chose to join an energy trading market that would raise customer bills, limit access to clean energy, & weaken grid reliability. Now, five NW energy and conservation groups, represented by Earthjustice, are suing to review & hopefully reverse BPA's decision.
BPA faces suit over energy market decision that opponents say would raise rates
The lawsuit comes after governors, lawmakers, utility regulators and renewable energy proponents in the region unsuccessfully pressed the BPA to reconsider its plans.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
