I had an amazing evening Not Online

you can't learn about more gross emails during a Brandi Carlile concert

(but now I'm doomscrolling on the subway, where you can learn about more gross emails 😖)

As my career progresses, I love spotting connections between books I've worked on. I just started copyediting a memoir that's like "my grandfather, the writer [x]" and went "omg, that guy from [other client's] book!" 🤯

@teawhilewriting.bsky.social I don't know if you're into I'm With Her, but they just announced a show in Salem on May 30 and I highly recommend it! (Nothing anywhere near me on this tour, alas, but I did get to see them twice last year *and* Sara W. gave me her set list, so I can't complain...)

wild AI story from the Olympics
ice dancers were told to use songs "in the style of the 1990s." One Czech pair tried using AI to pump out a song to skate to, but their AI bot fully plagiarized "You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals and they had to change it

2. I think I've mentioned this one here before, but the #1 most 90s thing that happened to me in the 90s was being reprimanded by a security guard at a Bill Clinton rally for half-assing the Macarena. (#2 most 90s thing: my Tamagotchi died while I was seeing the Good Burger movie.)

90s-themed rhythm dance making me feel very old this morning

a Dance Dance Revolution–inspired routine by people born in 2003, when I was at the mall watching my friends play Dance Dance Revolution 💀

You're all talking about Ilia Malinin being the Quad God because of his quadruple axels which is great but to me the Quad God is Martin Ashwood-Smith because of his quadruple stacks.

Listen, I'm not good with faces, so I use context clues to identify people. In this case, a great question to ask yourself would have been "Would it be realistic or wise to have a traumatized kid the government is actively trying to kidnap again in the Super Bowl halftime show?" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Next time somebody tries to get me to justify the existence of the humanities, I’ll just point out how for the past two Super Bowls we’ve all jumped online and engaged in collective semiotics and hermeneutics of the half-time show as text.

So that's the backstory for why my bio on here says "She/her/Dr. It's pronounced 'mar.'"

When I was adjuncting, I signed my emails Dr. Maher and had a line in my syllabus saying that Dr. and Prof. were both fine. I was way too insecure to go by Erin, but the tradeoffs were that 1) no one can pronounce Maher, and 2) some students would call me Mrs. Maher and I hate hate haaated it.

OKAY, I watched it, too many closeups of men trying to look solemn

lol, I missed it because I didn't plan ahead, so I'll have to wait for it to go online 🤡

This is the ur-grift: it’s not the get-rich-quick scheme that makes you rich, it’s teaching other people how to sell it to someone else.
To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.

She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.

It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

In fall 2020, the university for which I was kicking my own ass adapting my class for virtual teaching changed the pay schedule for adjuncts from biweekly to monthly *and* had the first payment come a month into the semester, which we learned when we got our contracts a week before classes started.

I am hitting a “music may not be a universal language” portion of my research (don’t ask) and I haven’t seen her cited yet, but I hope people never forget the contributions of Linda Shaver-Gleason, whose scholarly contributions did not stop in the face of her oncoming death. May we always remember.

This headline in The Chronicle makes it sound like most adjuncts are independently wealthy when the reality is they have to hold second and third jobs just to make ends meet.
