This thread is really important to read in full, and articulates why fighting unjust detention by ICE is so difficult. It also confirms why I decided not to look for a new job in the US after my layoff and move back to Canada.
I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

It's like when my flight home from Manchester soon after the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in 2017 was delayed by five hours because they shut down the whole terminal to deal with a Suspicious Item in someone's checked bag that turned out to be a jar of sauce wrapped in cables

but, uh, Worse

Hiss Golden Messenger at Ardmore Music Hall on November 4! That date sounds *so* fake and I *need* to believe in it. Day after the midterms!!
Buying tickets for stuff far enough in advance that the date sounds fake is one way I've been keeping myself from staring *too* hard into the Future Void, and I'm now up to Weird Al on August 4, 2026. Sounds fake but okay!!

I am making the biggest 😒 face
I will share this with my Bible and Misinformation class. It is an example of why teaching students what actual research involves is more important than ever, and needs to be coupled with explanation of how chatbots reaffirm the bizarre things users insist on.
New evidence shows that 'Jesus was never crucified' – and AI can prove it
Julian Doyle, a veteran filmmaker behind Monty Python's Life of Brian, says he's spent decades researching and claims the man put to death was not Jesus but someone else entirely

In @vanmusicmag.bsky.social on 12 Feb: my ranking/round-up of 345 Darius #Milhaud pieces! Over four months, I listened to or read as many of his 443 opus numbers as I could find. Today and tomorrow I’ll post highlights: as this is Milhaud, it’s going to be a LONG thread 1/

I had an amazing evening Not Online

you can't learn about more gross emails during a Brandi Carlile concert

(but now I'm doomscrolling on the subway, where you can learn about more gross emails 😖)

As my career progresses, I love spotting connections between books I've worked on. I just started copyediting a memoir that's like "my grandfather, the writer [x]" and went "omg, that guy from [other client's] book!" 🤯

@teawhilewriting.bsky.social I don't know if you're into I'm With Her, but they just announced a show in Salem on May 30 and I highly recommend it! (Nothing anywhere near me on this tour, alas, but I did get to see them twice last year *and* Sara W. gave me her set list, so I can't complain...)

wild AI story from the Olympics
ice dancers were told to use songs "in the style of the 1990s." One Czech pair tried using AI to pump out a song to skate to, but their AI bot fully plagiarized "You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals and they had to change it

You're all talking about Ilia Malinin being the Quad God because of his quadruple axels which is great but to me the Quad God is Martin Ashwood-Smith because of his quadruple stacks.

This is the ur-grift: it’s not the get-rich-quick scheme that makes you rich, it’s teaching other people how to sell it to someone else.
To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.

She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.

It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

Gates McFadden told a great story at a Star Trek convention I went to as a kid about Kermit goofing around with her props on a break between takes during her scene in “Muppets Take Manhattan” and finally she goes “KERMIT, STOP THAT!”, like straight to the frog, and the whole crew lost their shit
This is entirely correct / back in the day I was picked to ask Kermit a question at a Thing (all the questions were scripted but askers were allowed to embellish a little) and in the moment I was absolutely talking to Kermit, who is real.
the magic of the Muppets is that there are two fourth walls. they constantly break the one that reminds the audience they are performers. they NEVER break the one that reminds the audience they are puppets. this dynamic is the key to their entire comedy style
