Well, it doesn't surprise me that a British person said it that way, just that a US dictionary validated it, since I've heard that pronunciation before but (I think?) only from British people...

I always thought of that as a US/UK distinction, but even Merriam-Webster has "fāt" as the first pronunciation and "fet" as the second, which surprised me. 🤔

My self-employment origin story is that I taught at two universities (40 miles apart) for three semesters and burned out suddenly & *hard* a month into the third one. 🫠 I thought the money was pretty good at the time, but it wasn't.
