History professor @ OU, views are my own. Author of Mastering Emotions, 2021. I write about slavery, emotions, & poison, I skeet about teaching, politics, & pop culture. She / hers. Proud union member. Live in Detroit but my heart is still in NOLA
Driving around Raleigh today running errands and not only did I see an otherwise MAGA-stickered truck with a “Proud of my Eagle Scout” sticker we drove past the annual Boy Scout-run Christmas tree sale. This is a WILD culture war to decide to wage.

Especially as an elder millennial who came of age before the internet and cellphones it feels like living through an Age of Enlightenment only to then face down the Dark Ages.
It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Your periodic reminder that "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" is NOT POSSIBLE. It started as a joke about people so dumb that they thought they could do just that; it's now constantly repeated by people so dumb that they think _you_ should do it.

He’s a 10 but he told me his grandmother died 3 times
He's a 10 but he says he respects you to the UPmost degree

I've spent today swamped with grading and packing before we leave town so I guess I missed a day of people bagging on James Carville? Which is a shame, cause mocking that man is an automatic follow for me.

My Call of the Void is that we have a lot of friends in our neighborhood who have mail slots into their foyers and every time I have to slip something through them I start fantasizing about sticking in a hose or blowing in a handful of glitter.

“Wouldst thou like to live deliciously, Charlie Brown?”
“And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Charlie Brown. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.”
I’m not the guy you kill, Charlie Brown. I’m the guy you buy!

I love my neighborhood, we sent out the invite for our annual winter solstice party but mentioned that we still need a big Yule log to burn, within moments a neighbor said he has plenty in his garage and he’ll send photos tomorrow. So yeah, excited for some wood pics.

My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe
"The humanities really are a resource — a confidence for living in our times.” Dean Sara Guyer on the modern utility of humanities degrees

Tyson Foods announces that they’ll be closing a major beef-processing plant in Lexington, Nebraska with 3,200 employees.

Lexington has a population of 11,205.

Nebraska overwhelmingly voted for the orange felon over VP Kamala Harris.

I hope they’re enjoying their vote.

Remembering that Curtis Sittenfeld wrote a fictionalized version of Laura Bush’s story and every day that this demented bamboo saga drags on ensures that she’ll someday write the novelization of Cheryl Hines’ perspective on these events. Can we all agree now not to buy it when it inevitably happens?

Was at a holiday party tonight where Christmas carols were being blasted for the first hour then at some point I noticed “Vogue” was playing, followed by “Spice World,” as we were leaving “My Neck, My Back” was playing. Tis the reason for the season, put the “My Neck, My Back” back in Christmas.

I’ve often called this song—“Just Like Heaven”—the finest single of the 80s and meant it. This cover’s arrangement only confirms it for me 💜🔥

The cousin group chats have been lit today, I’m so pumped to chop it up in person next week with some of the funniest people I know IRL. We got less than five days, folks, the time to place side bets and sow family mischief is now.

OMG Sophie Willan of Taskmaster series 17 is coaching the queens on roasting in #DragRaceUK, do I have to believe in manifesting now?!?
Waiting for Rupaul to discover Taskmaster so we get a Taskmaster style challenge on #DragRaceUK called something like “Assmaster,” no doubt. Very curious if @jackbern.bsky.social could tell me if any former Taskmaster contestants have been guest judges on Drag Race UK. Joe Lycett when?

Reminded of when I taught at Tulane and a pair of stray kittens took up residence in a lecture hall. Around that time a colleague thought her office was haunted because she kept coming in to find books knocked off shelves onto the floor. It turned out a possum had been living in her office.
They're also responsible for one of the best emails I've ever received, when the college office sent out a plea for sightings of Professor Biscuit while conveniently forgetting to mention that he was a cat...(I won't comment on how often a similar email might have gone out about human Professors...)

When I lived in Paris and was missing Tex-mex food I went to a restaurant that put peas and carrots in the burrito and sold boxes of Oreos as American groceries, it was a scathing read.
I still think about the American Section I saw in the biggest supermarket in Copenhagen
